Golfing again after L5 S1 Microdiscectomy

Hello golfers:

I am seeking feedback from individuals who have had surgery and returned to the links. I am an avid golfer. I am targeting May 2009 to return to the links in game playing condition.

I had a microdiscectomy last June 2008. I am eager to return to the golf this spring/summer. I haven't picked up a club since surgery. I have been walking extensively since surgery and have done lots of PT, exercise core muscles daily, and now back at the health club lifting weights every other day.

I am seeking feedback on when you returned back to play, how soon ? Were you able to swing just as hard post surgery ? Did you visit a golf pro to improve your swing mechanics ? How did you score ? What recommendations would you have for myself and others returning to the links ? After playing did you experience any back issues or re-injuries ?

Any insights would be great.

  • I have never been a golfer but I saw you didn't have any responses and thought I'd put my two cents in here. I have had two microD's now and after the second one I went through physical therapy and pretty much all of the advise given to me by my physical therapist who works in direct contact with my spine surgeon and my PT is also a spine specialist was twisting as in golf is really bad for the spine.

I lift weights now and use an exercise ball and bands and swim and all of it I do while keeping my spine straight. I've heard of people herniating a disc while playing golf. I know it's hard to give up something you love but it is risky and probabably will cause a problem with the disc. I'm not sure how you could swing differently to keep the spine straight. Maybe there is a way. I've learned how to modify every single thing I do and still keep my spine straight while doing anything physical.
