I HAVE DDD , CHRONIC PAIN , OA , MILD TO MODERATE BULDGES UP AND DOWN SPINE , NARROWING OF SPINAL CANAL AND OTHER THINGS MY MIND WON'T LET ME REMEMBER RIGHT NOW .
IN 1993 I HAD PAIN DEVELOP IN LEFT HIP AND LEG THAT GOT MUCH WORSE SO AFTER HAVING BUNCHES OF THINGS WRONG WITH ME ( SO SEVERAL DR.'S TOLD ME ) I HAD A BULDGE CUT FROM L5-S1 AND HAD LITTLE PAIN UNTIL 1996 WHEN IT CAME BACK 10 FOLD , TEST AND MORE TESTS FOUND NOTHING , DR. SAID HE SAW NOTHING TO CAUSE PAIN FROM MRI SO HE EXPLORED TO FIND L5-S1 WAS GONE AND THE BONES WERE RUBBING TOGETHER CAUSING NERVE DAMAGE AND SCAR TISSUE ON THE NERVES AND THAT I WOULD ALWAYS HAVE PAIN FROM THERE , IN 2000 I HAD C6-7 FUSED BY A DR. PARK IN SPRINGFIELD MO. AND REALLY WISH HE WAS STILL AROUND BUT I WAS HIS LAST PATIENT AS HE WENT TO HELP FOLKS IN THIRD WORLD COUNTRIES , WELL FROM ABOUT 1998 I WAS ON PAIN MEDS AND IN 1999 WAS PUT ON OXYCONTIN THAT HELPED AND I STILL WORKED THOUGH THE DR. THOUGHT I SHOULD NOT , I HAD SEVERAL SURGERIES FROM 2 HERNIAS , 95% BLOCKAGE OF COROTID ARTERY , 2 MICRO KNEE AND ANOTHER OR SO BUT I WAS DISABILED IN 2003 AS THE PAIN WAS GETTING THE BEST OF ME .
6 MONTHS OR SO AGO THE PAIN GOT WORSE THEN WAY WORSE WHEN I FELL THROUGH A FLOOR 3 FEET WITH MY GOOD RIGHT LEG , MY HOME DR ORDERED A CT SCAN OF MY WHOLE SPINE AND THE REPORT WAS 4 PAGES LONG SO TO A SPECIALIST I WENT AND HE HAD ME GO THROUGH A MYLOGRAM , I HAVE HAD 2 BEFORE THAT DIDN'T HURT ME BUT THIS ONE NEAR MADE ME CRY AFTER IT WAS OVER AND I WAS WAITING IN A ROOM FOR ANOTHER CT SCAN , LOWER BACK AND BOTH LEGS HURT TERRIBLE BAD SO DR SAID WHAT I NEEDED WAS THIS , TAKE HARDWARE FROM L5-S1 OUT AND REPLACE IT WITH BIGGER BOLTS , L4 WAS THE SIZE OF A SMALL STRAW END PUSHED TOGETHER IN MIDDLE AND L3 ALSO BAD , HE SAID THEY WERE DETERORIATEING L4 REALLY BAD AND I NEEDED FUSION FROM L5-S1 UP TO AND INCLUDEING L3 AND AFTER SURGERY I COULD BE CUT DOWN FROM THE OXYCONTIN TO PERKOCET THEN NOTHING FOR PAIN BUT ASPRIN , I CAN'T SEE HOW THIS WILL HELP THE NERVE DAMAGE AND SCAR TISSUE FROM 1996 SURGERY AND WILL THE NEXT DISC UP (L2 ) NOT TAKE ALL THE PRESSURE FROM THE ONES FUSED ? I SHOULD MENTION THAT I HAD A PAIN PUMP PUT IN 2 YEARS AGO THAT HELPED A LOT , IT CUT THE OXYCONTIN TO VICODIN BUT THE SITE WHERE THE PUMP WAS PUT IN GOT INFECTED WITH STAPH AND HAD TO COME OUT IN 6 MONTHS SO I WAS TRYING TO GET OFF THE OXYCONTIN WITH THE PUMP BUT INSTEAD WAS NEARLY DOUBLED IN STRENGTH AND # PER DAY .
IF YOU COULD FOLLOW ME ON THIS CAN ANYONE RELATE TO THIS AND OFFER ANY ADVICE AS TO WHAT TO DO , I AM GOING TO GET A SECOND OPINION BUT I CAN'T DO ANY OF THE THINGS THAT MAKE ME HAPPY ANYMORE AND AM BEGINNING TO THINK IT GOING TO GET WORSE STILL AND I DON'T THINK I COULD TAKE ANY MORE , REALLY AT WITS END , ANY , ANY THOUGHT WILL HELP .
GOD BE WITH YOU .

  • You sure have been through an ordeal. I guess they want to go back in and repair things with this upcoming fusion. I know this is a very difficult decision to make after all this has happened and I don't know what to say. My problems aren't extensive as yours but I have been through a 2 level fusion of L4-S1 which hasn't helped with my pain. The DDD is severe on those levels and I also found out I have scar tissue affecting the nerve and it's causing terrible pain. You're doing the right thing by getting a second opinion. It seems like when it comes to back procedures, nothing is guaranteed to work 100%. I've been through all kinds of treatment and imagining and there seems to be no end in sight. I may also have a morphine pump put in later on and I'm sorry you wound up with staph; that was scary. Believe me that I relate to your pain and anguish. I'm glad that you came across Spine Health, it's a wonderful community and it has helped me through the worst of times. I know now that I'm not alone in the suffering and it helps to have someone who responds and relates to what you're experiencing. Please update us on how you're doing and if you decide to have another fusion. Take care
  • I was so sorry to hear your story. Getting a second opionion is a very good first step. To answer your question honestly, in my opinion it will not help your nerve damage. But I feel the Dr.'s must know what they are doing right? I pray that they will be able to help you, soon.
I know you feel at witts end and believe me you are not alone in this. I thought I was until I found this site of wonderful people who are all here for the same reasons. I can tell you it has helped me :) Even though I have a great family I still felt alone. Well now I'm not and neither are you.
I pray everything works out for you

  • Definitely! That's a lot of levels to fuse together. Wouldn't that severely limit mobility?

    Best wishes,
    EM
  • Hi painman, I am sorry to hear that you are in so much pain. For me fusion was the best thing I've ever done. Like you I had been told I have permanent nerve damage, and this was after 3 lumbar discectomies. The pain and numbness was awful and then began to get much worse. MRI showed 2 collapsed discs pinching 3 nerves. With this pain on top of nerve damage I was having big trouble walking with a cane. I was worried I would not be able to walk much longer. I had L4-S1 fused 1 year ago and I haven't used my cane once. I still have many issues with my right foot /sometimes leg, permanent damage is just that. Before surgery my leg/foot was a 9-10 pain level always. Now I am 1/2 that with less severe flare ups. So no, it won't help your nerve damage to have fusion but it could prevent additional damage from happening. For me I became more afraid of staying the way I was, and less afraid of surgery. It gave me a chance to feel better. I'd had prior successful cervical fusions too, so that also helped my decision. Sorry so long, hope I can help in some way.

    Keep Hope,
    Faith M
