Back Surgery

I had L5/S1 surgery done on Dec.19 for a herniated disc that was 2 1/2in. x 2 1/2 in. Because of the severity of the herniation I also had loss of feeling to my private area leaving me with no sensation to relieve my bladder. That is when I opted for surgery. Here is my problem:

I have terrible low back pain and tightness in my right buttock. Went back to NS and MRI shows I reherniated the same disc. Doc says to wait 2 weeks and see what happens???

I am on 400mg of Neurontin 6xday, 500mg Vicodin 6xday, 4mg prednisolone taper pack,4mg Zanaflex 3x day.. And to boot I have 5 children, used to work as an EMT now I can't work. Don't know what I am supposed to do to make a living these days or what to think about my back???? PLEASE HELP!!!! Any info would be greatly appreciated!!!!!!

  • I dont know what to tell you. I would ask my Dr what 2 weeks are going to accomplish. Also what he/she can, or is going to do about it. If it has re herniated, and with 5 kids you need to have a plan. Something you can focus on instead of the pain. Call his office for new appt and meet with him/her and find out whats next. Only he can answer that for you. Wish I could help you more. I had back pain for 2 1/2 years before they found my problem. I know what waiting not knowing does. Good Luck.
  • With the support of your husband, kids and God it will get better in time. Make sure you tell doctor every little pain you fill so its documented.

    Will you the best, it does get better.
  • I don't know what else to tell you other than my thoughts & prayers are with you. I can't even imagine going through this with 5 kids. {{{{{hugs}}}}}}
  • I have 1 week left... Why does the doc say come back in 2 weeks?? Is there something like a miracle going to happen within that time frame?? Does it reabsorb that quickly?
  • I'm a little puzzled. You say you had surgery. What did the dr do, if he didn't remove the disk during surgery? I don't know a lot about lumbar surgery, but have L4-5 bulging, plus stenosis, causing pain, leg neuropathy. Looking here to find out the options. Thanks.

  • I think the prednisone may help the pain and swelling go down and see how you feel. They may reoperate after maybe trying more epis but I really am just guessing so I hope the pain goes away or you may need more surgery again. But I'm not a Dr and can't say for sure. Take care. Charry
    DDD of lumbar spine with sciatica to left hip,leg and foot. L4-L5 posterior disc bulge with prominent facets, L5-S1 prominent facets with a posterior osteocartilaginous bar. Mild bilateral foraminal narrowing c-spine c4-c7 RN
  • The herniated disc(2 1/2 x 2 1/2) was removed leaving the rest alone. It's reherniated...hence another MRI,Dr. visit and surgery?
