Hello:

I had ACDF C4/5 one week ago. After surgery, I notice now tht when I wake up, my left hand (2 fingers) are numb. That was not the case prior to surgery. Though, when Im up for a bit, the feeling comes back.

Also, I now, post surgery, notice periodic warm sensations in my right foot, when Im sittig or standing. It only lasts for 20 seconds or so and then goes away. If this something you have experienced?

  • in my very limited experience of things this sounds like it could be nerves that are getting trapped for some reason. I know that on nights where my back or sciatica pain is bad I sleep or end up sleeping in odd positions & sometimes I have numbness in part of one of my hands when i first wake up which fairly quickly clears. I can also get hot or burning patches on my legs which I have always put down as part of the sciatica. Hopefully some of the more informed members might be able to assist further, but good luck with your recovery, I hope things ease up soon. db
  • Thanks DB, I put a call into my PCP and my NS to see about this as well.
  • Does anyone else have any symptoms like this?
  • I haven't had those symptoms. Just real super achy back of the neck and of course the wicked muscle spasms. I just over did it taking a shower.
  • A few days after surgery I got a ton of numbness and some pain where I've never had it before. I was sure I had done something to screw up the surgery, but the doctor said any numbness or pain is from inflammation from the surgery. Sure enough, it went away after a few weeks. Hope this helps.
  • I haven't had my surgery yet, but the finger numbness is one of the reasons I'm having surgery. With me it's the median nerve, so my left thumb and first two fingers are affected. They also get worse if I sleep with my hand above my head.

The numbness went into pain and then intense pain and burning... hence my reason for getting an MRI.

The sensation goes away after 20 minutes or so most of the time. It makes me feel like I want to constantly "shake it out"... but there isn't any redness or color disruption. Just the icky feeling.

I haven't had any leg or foot issues... but again, I don't get the surgery for another 2 weeks.

  • Today, after walking around the house, my arm went numb along with mild pain to my middle finger. I sure hope this is normal. It's been fine after resting for a while. Tomorrow I'll be one week post op.
