I have had chronic back pain since 1995. It started with stiffness or tightness in the neck in 1991 and was treated with chiropractic care. In 1995 it developed into low-back pain and I could hardly walk. In March 1996 a lumbar MRI showed L5-S1 disc protrusion and mild central canal stenosis, with moderate facet degeneration. Later in March I got a nerve block, followed by an epidural steroid injection by the same doctor. In May 1996 an EMG was "normal" and ligament injury was suspected. On May 15, 1996 I had a L5-S1 discectomy. The discectomy helped maybe 10%, but the pain continued.
More nerve blocks at a Pain Management Clinic, with PT, TENS evaluation, pool therapy, psychiatric evaluation, biofeedback. Nothing helped! Then in 2002 the left back pain began every other day, with alternate days of left back muscle spasms. This has continued to today, like clockwork.
Now I am on Neurontin, Ultram, Fioricet w codine, and Lyrica on pain days. At night I can't sleep without Ambien, or Zolpidem. Has anyone heard of back pain every other day, with days in between with muscle spasms that are almost as bad?
