Had discectomy in April 08 now need another?

Had a L5 S1 discectomy in April 08 and felt great relief although had some slight nerve pain which never really went away but was told it was to be expected. Now the sciatic pain has returned down the same leg but is evident in different situations than it was before, ie lying in bed turning as opposed to sitting and standing up as before.
I went for an MRI scan last week and the surgeon informs me that either he didnt take enough of the disc away first time or the same disc has slipped out further.

Im thinking seriously of another op but am worrying as to whether there could be complications due to previous op on the disc.
The surgeon is very matter of fact and is not really sympathetic nor does he offer much in the way of options.

Any opinions or advice would be appreciated.

  • I had my first surgery in May of 06, then had a two level fusion on the same disc and the one above it (C5-C7) in May of 08. Now I've just found out in March of 09 that my C4-C5 has ruptured and is compressing the spinal cord. Doing the shots in the neck first to see if I can avoid surgery. I'm afraid that for those of us that have these problems, repeats and additional surgeries are not uncommon. Good luck.
  • i had l5-s1 micro in nov 08 feel good. Doc did tell me due to the severaty of first one if i had more problemshe would have to fuse them together. I hope ya get better i take alieve at night to help sleep or i wake up in alot of pain and sleep in a brace most of the time. If i dontstay streathed out at night and morn i hurt alot more.
