I am 9 days post op - Posterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion (L5, S1). The only pain I have is where my incision is. My back feels very stiff and I hope that this goes away with time.

How long does the stiffness last? I hope it is not permanent.

  • Nope, not permanent. I was stiff for 2-3 months. Then it went away. Now it's only rough on colder days or after laying on my stomach for too long.
  • I remembered the days after the fusion. After surgery, i was in so much pain that I refused to get out of bed. lol. so I was really stiff. After 2 to 3 months, I decided that this is not my life, got up and started walking. At first around the house, then to the garden, then outside. It took a lot of babysteps. The stiffness slowly lifted, and the pain got lesser and lesser. The brace helped a lot for me.

  • I'm 24 days post op & still very stiff. I don't do much at all yet :( Doc's orders. I'm so afraid of gaining weight!! Dang was hoping I would be able to start phy. therapy soon LOL NOT, can't do that till 3 month post op.
I walk around the house & will start walking some outside soon. Still cool up here.

Anyway I wish you the best.

  • Hello,
I'm 5 weeks post op for 2 level plif L4 L5 & S1. I went grocery shopping today! Yeah, still stiff sometimes. Mostly in the evening or late afternoon. Walking far is still an issue. I can walk...just wont break any speed records. Doc said that will improve with time. I dont find out if I'm fusion until June 19th so no PT for me until at least then.
Just like everyone says on here...patience, patience, patience!
    Best of luck to you,
