Hi everyone! I am a 39 yr old female (Jacksonville, FL) and am having a 3 level lumbar global fusion on 4/7/09. Have had pain for several years that went undiagnosed by my PCP. I was put on forced medical leave from work (in a hospital :))( ) when I no longer was able to lift anything and had to use a cane to walk. I then decided to try and apply for disability, and my doc finally ordered a MRI... Little did I realize that several discs were blown out, dried up, my vertebrae were slipping around, nerves damaged, etc., etc., etc. (You guys get the picture!)
Anyway, I've been looking for some support from others who have gone through this. I'm so glad to have found this site. (The pre&post op must haves post is especially helpful, thank you!)
I am interested in tips on recovering at home, dealing with family, etc.
I have found that I cannot talk to my husband about certain concerns due to the fact that if he cannot do anything to help a situation, he doesn't want to talk about it. He kind of freaks out if I mention anything about pain after surgery or fears that I have. I think he is just worried about me and upset that he will not have control.
Anyway, thank you to everyone out there and am looking forward to some new friends.

  • I had pain for 3 months before I asked my Dr for an MRI. She thought it was just a muscle pull. So working through the pain I ended up with the herniated disc and tear. I'm sorry your PCP didn't order tests on you or refer you to a Specialist. I hope your surgery is successful and alleviates your pain. Under surgery forums is a list for what all you need for your surgery. Take care and we'll be here to give you support. Charry

  • Hiya , gentle gentle >:D< , Welcome to Spine Health, we all understand what you are going through, and the pain you are feeling ;) We are all here for you emotionally :D we can give you support when you need it :) Its difficult for our families to understand what we are going through 8> just as much as we dont really know what they are thinking and going through, any back surgery is scary :? It also takes a long time to heal, it can not be forced or rushed, i know this from personal experience :S So as for the healing and recovery, just let nature take over, and time is the healer.
Hope to see you around. Keep posting!! >:D< :H

Take care & good luck with the surgery!!!!

The next few days are going to be very busy for me as I have to go donate my blood, meet w/ the Ortho surg, General surg, and the hospital for all the pre-op stuff. Just found out today that I qualify for a program in my area that loans out medical equip for after surgery =D> (shower chair, bed table, toilet riser, etc.) This is going to help immensely.
