I'm new to this forum so please bear with me. I got injuried in October 2007 at work. I have had 3 EMGs, 2 MRIs, and an X-Ray since then all showing that I have a bulging disc @ L2-L3, Herniated disc @ L3-L4, and another bulging disc @ L4-L5 ( my last MRI was in April 2008 though). I have been to a pain mgt doctor, 3 chiropractors, an acupuncturist, 3 orthos, a neurologist, have been given 15 different medications including some for depression and 3 physcial therapy places ( for 3 different kinds of therapy). I have done everything the doctors and workers comp people have asked me to do and I'm still experiencing extreme pain on a daily basis. I just finished 41 sessions of decompression therapy which seemed to make my pain worse and am now starting post decompression therapy. My ortho is now sending me to another neurosurgeon and I'm afraid of what he's going to say. I have been out of work for over a year now for this injury and since have lost my position at my workplace, I'm always either extremely angry or crying and am at odds with my family over all of this. I'm really not sure what to do anymore. Throughout this whole thing I have been harrassed by my WC adjuster and nurse case manager. My stress level is higher than I ever thought it could go and my pain tolerance is non existant anymore. I can't sit, stand or walk for more than 20 mins anymore. I'm only 27 years old and my personal life is kabut now! I really need advice from someone who has been through this sort of thing before. I get advice from family and friends but they don't seem to understand what I'm feeling.. physically or mentally. Please help! Any advice will be appreciated! Thanks for listening.

  • Sorry I also forget to mention that my last EMG said I had 6 damaged nerves in my back and my x-ray report says something about disc leakage and also have had 3 epidural shots
  • I am in the same position as you I injured my back in Sept 06 and had a microD in jan 07 and returned to work 2 months later then reherniated a couple months later went a year working through it and doing all the therapy and bs like that and had another microD in july 08 and have been out of work since because I reherniated 2 weeks later and the Comp case worker keeps asking when I think I can go back to work , I tell you that to tell you this emg's and MRI s show damage but if you want to prove that you are indeed in pain a DISCOGRAM will show that, it is a painful procedure but it solidifies your pain to the comp people . I just had one 2 weeks ago and it sucked but it does the job to prove your not lying or milking it .
  • schedule an appointment with a spine surgeon. I know everyone talks about neurosurgeons and orthopedic docs, but there are plenty of doctors who deal only and specifically with the spine. I'm sorry you're in such pain, physically and emotionally...it all really sucks, but there is hope for you. I'm not sure how W.C. works...do you have to go where they send you? I know any dealing with government agencies sucks...they're supposed to be there to help, but it will ultimately be up to you to be aggressive in seeking relief from your pain. Also, if you have disc leakage, those ESIs may not work. The way my surgeon explained the leakage is that its like glue...soft and pliable inside the disc, but hardening outside the disc. I know its very difficult on family members...they hate to see you in pain, but they don't really understand it either. Unfortunately many people have a hard time understanding that which they have never endured. All of us here understand! How does decompression therapy work? Don't despair...there is help for you and remember that many people who have achieved long lasting relief don't post on this sight!
  • I am glad that you found this place where there are many people who will support you and offer advice.

Some people who haven't experience extreme pain for 24/7 have no idea what you are going through, so vent here.

I have been on a traction machine and it was suppose to decompress but made the pain worse.

Looks like you have tried almost all the conservative treatments. I think going to see a spine specialist is the right choice now. There are more treatments available. Go forward with seeing a spine specialist: neurosurgeon or orthopedic surgeon.
