back brace and bone stimulator

I had a spinal fusion 3/2/09. L-5 disc removed. Does anyone who has had this done have to wear a brace? Does anyone out there have a bone stimulator?

My doctor told me to wear the brace everyday. When will I know if the fusion is successful and what is the recovery time? I'm 62 and have been out of work 6 weeks, I have 12 weeks to return or loose my job. Is there anyone else in this position?

  • My doc gave me a brace too, but I wear it when I'm walking around and things like that, can't wear it while I'm siting hurts to bad.
as for the bone stimulator, not sure the one you have, but mine is a "Spinal-stim" and come to find out that it causes extreme pain to my jar/back tooth, that was broken during the surgery.....so I wear it an 1/2 hour at a time and I have to lay down on the tooth starts to throb .I am on fml for now but thats over on july 1st, so I hope I'm better by then

  • That sucks about the job, my work is very good as long as you can return to normal duties, I did the FMLA for 12 weeks now on a personal/medical LOA for a month and if needed another month on a personal LOA before they would terminate.

As for the brace, I didnt wear one after a 3level fusion even tho at times I would had liked to.

I would think a brace would hurt tho if used too long due to muscle atrophy.
  • Betty,

I also had a three level fusion with instrumentation, and never wore braces, as my surgeon does not make his patient use it. I am not sure what kind of bone simulator you are talking about, there are the external ones, and the ones that are implanted during surgery. I have this latter, and it is a bone fusion stimulator that was supposed to be active for 6 months, but I was fused by 5 months, so it just sits under my skin, until I decide to have it out (or forever).

  • It is a exterior stimulator. How will I know when or if my back has fused? Do x-rays show this? My next appt is 5/20/09 with an x-ray before the visit. Will I ever walk normally again? This stimulator is good for 9 months.

    Thanks

  • went to doctor today said i am doing good showing bone growth.yes i had to wear turtle brace i call it, anytime i was up, but today i got told i could stop wearing it....as far as work goes i got injured in 07 at work they held my job a year or so for me but they was great for working with me like they did, i miss my job but Dr. said i will be looking for another occupation...so that sucks i love working with seniors and adults with disabilities, but im looking at maybe becoming like a case manager or something in that line.Anyway good luck to you.
  • Betty,

Your X-ray at your next appointment is mostly to see if everything (hardware) is in place. Later x-rays will shoe the beginning an completion of bone growth (fusion) but my surgeon told me that it is not likely that it shows that before 3-months. Some people claim they were fused at 6 weeks, but perhaps what they had was the beginning of bone growth. Some people don't have that until 9 months or later, since everybody is different. So if yours won't show fusion yet, don't be impatient, it is normal.

    Best wishes,
