Well, how to begin this? I'm new. Guess you knew that. I have for the past several months been having neck pain that spread to my shoulders and now back. I believe my PT guy said my T5 - T6 were "out of wack". I've had a neck Xray that showed I have "Reverse Cervical Lordosis". This was after two months complaining of pain and being told I just had a Trap strain. I now feel as if I am going to grow wings and there is about a two inch spot right on my spine that makes me feel like there is a rusty, sharp hunting knife burried about 4". At my Sports Med Dr's office the resident told the Dr that it looked like there was "rotation" concerning my C-Spine. I cannot look up, my hands go numb for two hrs at a time probly 2 times a week, I look like a body builder (my traps) I'm 29, 5'9, female, and used to weigh 120 until they put me on all these "nerve meds" and I have not been as active with my children. In one mo I have gained 25lbs and I have not changed my eatting habits at all. As a matter of fact I have hyperthyroidism and crazy metabolism. Now, my Primary Dr refuses to prescribe any pain meds (I can understand) BUT I printed off a list of non-narcotic drugs (tramadol?) and he told me that i would be on it forever because this problem would last forever. (hmmmfffpppppff) During my appts. I get to learn all about proper body mechanics and how to hold my kids. Okay......I know about proper mechs. and I am pretty close to running down the street screeming. I cannot even get him to do an MRI or even back XRAY!!!! My sports Med dr refered me to a physical Health Doc and my Primary Doc said not to go. he said she would probly just prescribe meds and if I took them I would not be a good moomy (his exact words). Now.....I can't get a straight answer from anyone! My neck hurts, my arms and hands go numb, my arm bones ache (the right side more than left), my shoulder blades are shot!, and I have the rusty knife in my back. Please Please...help!Ps.... I think my Dr is trying to OD me on 2000mg of Naproxen a day!

  • Hi there and welcome to Spine-Health.

I'm not sure what kind of insurance you have, but can you go to a spine specialist? Sounds like you need someone who better understands what can happen with the spine and what can be done to help.

    Just my two cents.
  • I finally got a referal! I can't wait! My husband is a Police Officer and we have great insurance (not even a co-pay)but it's getting the Drs to take you seriously that is the problem! You tell them you have pain and it's almost like they just dismiss you. I am a good person, I don't speed, I take good care of my kids (and other kids if need be), I am a volunteer EMT, a certified nursing assistant and I even give dogs hit by cars CPR!! SO, WHY won't he listen? Docs these days don't even touch you! hummpfff.....I feel better now! ~X(

They can better figure out whats going on with more information. The more they have in detail, the better they are in solving the crime, it spinal situations, it is what is the problem.
So, working with your doctors is so very important. Establishing a trust is key... You want to have you doctor order various diagnostic tests so that they can figure out what is wrong.
Some people say tell the doctor, no insist.... I have to say, no , that is not the way to get things dong.
Welcome to Spine-Health, you will find a lot more than just patient forums here.

  • hi and welcome to the forum! :H we are here to offer you support and answer what questions we can. please do not think this doctor has the last word. :? perhaps you need a pain management doctor. when meds are used properly, you can still have a functioning life without so much pain. :D good luck and i hope you give this a try! =D> Jenny :)
  • I hope you get a Dr who will give some pain meds and an MRI. I had to even tell my Dr to order the MRI but she started me on slow release narcotic and I don't feel high or anything just pain reduction but I had to go to the Dr many times until we got the right meds and have been alternating some. Your Dr should be trying to help you. I even had to go to ER twice as my Dr was on vacation and received some meds and I still have some leftover for break through pain but I don't like thm. Anyway I hope you get the help you need like an MRI and pain meds. I gained 50+ pounds on those meds so try to walk as those pounds are hard to lose. I even had to get supersize clothes as none of mine fit. Good luck and take care. Charry

  • :H ..you rant away hun, :))(
  • So, yesterday my DR called to tell me that the radiologist (I went into the ER) called and emailed him that I had a spot on my right cardiophenic something or another and that "an MRI is REQUIRED". He shad no choice. They called yesterday and today in I went. 1 hr and 15 min in the tube with my butt bone on FIRE! My DR did write me a prescription for 2 YES 2 Vicodin before I went to the MRI since I would be laying falat and still for so long. They did my neck and my thoracic vertebre. Also, the best part is when I went into the ER (my hands were numb from 8:30am until I went in at 1:30 am the next morning/that night. THe doctor working the ER said that he could not help me because I was suffering from "chronic pain" and that my dr had put a note in my electronic chart that I was not to use pain pills due to the fact that I was suffering from a muscle strain. So I cried and freaked out and demanded anXRAY and guess what?? The fact that my disc are outta wack showed up on an XRAY! Someone had to be watching over me that day. The ER DR did say that I was fine and gave me a script for prednisone. As soon as I get my MRI results back and the email the radiologist sent my DR I am going to hospital administration. I'm over it! They CANNOT AND WILL NOT treat people that way. If I have to I'll go to the news. I think this problem is way bigger than me. How many other people are living in pain and depression because they cannot get help? This has to stop! I'll keep you guys posted when I get my results!
  • I hope they find out what is going on with your spine. It is hard when the doctors aren't doing anything to really help. I don't know about you but the naproxin does nothing for me any more. Watch your stomach on it too. I am glad that the ER doctor was able to get you an MRI. Keep us posted.

    Take care,
