Surgical Staples

Ok, now that I've had the surgery I've found something new to fixate on LOL....staples. I'd love to hear how many days post-op you got yours out & how it was pain wise. I know it doesn't take very long to get them out, so I'm sure I can put up with whatever amount of annoyance/pain happens, but I'd still like to know what to expect. I thought I was getting mine out this week (12 days post-op), but I just looked at my appointment card & my next appt is scheduled at 21 days post-op which seems like a long time to have them in. -I'm not sure if that's just a scheduling mistake or what...I have to wait until Monday to call & see.

Thanks!

  • I would call the Surgeon's office and ask. It seems like a long time to me also. I had only one suture after shoulder arthroscopy and after 10 days the skin was growing over it. My friend Nurse removed the stitch for me and it has like a keloid scar after that but has now disappeared. I hope you find out soon. I just wanted to bring your message to the top again and get a time estimate from someone who had the same surgery and staples. Good luck. Charry

  • Hi Erin,

I got mine out (all 20 of them) at 10 or 11 days post-op. It did hurt during the removal of 2 or 3 of them, but for the most part, it wasn't bad.

21 days seems like a long time to have them in. I would definitely call your doctor's office and ask about it.

I hope everything else is going well (it seems to be, according to the last line in your signature).
  • Hi Erin,

My staples were also removed at 10 days. It sure seems like a long time; worth checking back with your surgeon. I used to work with surgeons (other type of surgery) and I don't ever recall staples staying in for 20 days.

Glad you feel so great so soon after your surgery! Take it easy and don't overdue it.

  • They originally told me they would pull my upcoming SCS staples at one week. When they scheduled my followup it is at 10 days. I asked them about it and they told me 10 days is about as long as they like to go, after that they get imbedded and harder more painfull to remove.

I would call and get a firm explanation and make them promise to numb that area if they are going to wait that long!

  • My gut tells me the same thing!
  • I had mine for three weeks. It was not comfortable having them removed. But, it lasted 2-3 minutes and it was over. I can barely see where my incision is located (ALIF).

  • Few, good to know Keith! Thank you! It seems like so many people get them out by the 2nd week so I was starting to panic. I can't wait till morning to find out if I was scheduled wrong or if I can get them out this week...they are getting really itchy & uncomfortable & I don't want to have to wait another week.
  • Hi Erin,

I am really hoping you can get your staples out sooner than 21 days, mine were only in about 9 days and getting them out was a nightmare. My experience seems to be unusual as I posted a query about how much pain to expect when they came out and the general consensus was that it might pull a little but it was no big deal.

I had 10 staples to get out and 8 of them were embedded. I had healed much quicker than expected and they should have come out sooner. It was really painful but thakfully didn't take long once the nurse got going.

Hope you have a much easier time of it, let us know what the Doc says!

    Take care

  • I had 50 staples. I was in the rehab hospital when a nurse took them out. It was kind of late at night, I had had my night time medications, I was getting sleepy and she came in with another nurse to take them out. They visited back and forth which was to distract me and she very carefully took out all 50. It didn't hurt. That was about 3 weeks and maybe a few more days after surgery. It was no big deal in my case. Try not to worry.
  • I spoke to the Drs office & they're getting me in on Thursday. :D I'll let ya know how it goes....but I'm thinking positive & my hubbie said he'll distract me as much as he can.
  • I got them out 15 days post-op...there were 12 in all. I only felt a tiny pinch on some of them, other I didn't even feel. -Taking off the bandaid actually hurt more than removing the staples.

Just thought I'd update incase "future generations" need the info. :D
  • I went 3 weeks before having mine taken out.
I actually had more discomfort when he removed the stitches.
    The staples were a breeze.
I meant to tell you that before you went so you would not worry.
Glad it was a non event for you.

I've had 30+ surgical staples in since May 1st and notdue to get them out until the 19th! I know that at least half will be embedded by then! I tried to tell the neurosurgeons secretary. But she wouldn't listen. I'm going to want to punch someone for every one that hurts coming out!!!!! I had similar surgery same time last year. So I know what to expect. Staple were removed 10 days post-op not 19!

It may be due to the length of your incision that the surgeon wants them left in a bit longer........mine were in for my revision surgery for 21 days before my surgeon took them out. It was no worse than the first time.......

    7-10 days is the usual!

I had 10 staples on and abide me having asked 3 times if I had staples and when I had to go to my GP I was told that I didn't have staples on just glue and steri strip.

I had lower back surgery so couldn't really see but I'm not stupid I could feel the bumps so called them up and asked to check my file and again was told no staples.
By the time I got yo my GP for a fit to work letter I asked him to just check that the incision had healed okay and he told me about the staples. By then 18 days pos surgery I was totally healed and all 10 staples had embedded I to the skin. The GP managed to remove 9 but I had to go to hospital to get the last one removed.
It was excruciating, my limbs shook non stop and my blood pressure dropped. Im not squimish to pain, I've given birth naturally, I have 3 tattoos and back in my adolescence had 2 piercings so I can say I don't scream at the sight of a needle. But the pain was out of this world apparently because I heal very well.
My follow up app is 6 wks pos surgery but they failed badly to give me wrong I go in regards to having staples. I'm making a claim because this sort of medical negligence is outrageous.
