This is my first post.
I had a microdiskectomy for herniation/extrusion of L5/S1 on May 6th of this year.
I am a nurse of 30 years, on Workmans Comp due to the injury in my back. The injury was cumulative from late Spring 08, until the injury was identified FINALLY in Oct 08, surgery was finally done 5/09.
I had the procedure, spent the night in the hospital, and went home. The "pins and needles" in my left foot disappeared for about 10 days, but have now returned. Approx. one week post-op, I was unable to void for about 12 hours (just a few "dribbles" here and there), and was finally taken to our local ER, due to pain and distended bladder. They cathed me, and ended up leaving the catheter in. They obtained 1800cc of urine when I was cathed. The cath stayed in for one week, and we took it out a week ago today. I still don't have good ability to empty my bladder and I cannot feel the urine leaving my body.
My MD office and my WC nurse say I need more time. I still have the sciatic pain down my left buttock, over my left thigh and down my leg. I have not had any physical therapy yet.
I see my MD on June 11, as my first post-op visit.
I am terribly depressed and feel that the surgery did not do what it should. My MD said that nerves regenerate at about 1/8th mm/ mo.
I would be interested to hear how any of you have fared through this, and what my furture holds. Am I just impatient or do I have a valid concern?
