This is a bit of a saga!!! Hurt my lower back at work 12/19/07-tried usual conservative stuff till May 08 when back locked-up completely-have been bent over since, with muscle spasms on movement, constant pain etc. Have had physio, accupunture, aqua-therapy, drugs etc.. Finally got approval to have ESI's x 2 and MBB. ESI's lasted about 2 hours then back to usual quasi-modo stance. MBB was negative. referred to surgeon (Nov 08) who advised L4/5 L5/S1 fusion, excision of right transverse process of right L5 with a TLIF and cage at L4/5. The workers comp. have sent me to many specialists (5) who all agree that I got injured at work but the legal stuff has allowed them to decline my surgery. Got a lawyer, today they have agreed to re-do the MBB and then perhaps radio frequency neurotomy. Since ESI's and failed MBB (aug 08) my mobility has decreased, now in a wheelchair outside. My legs forget how to work frequently and I eat painkillers too much. Having had poor results from ESI's and MBB it scares me that time goes on without any positive treatment option. My employer will only hold my job till July 1st-I understand my boss but it hurts to lose another part of me. It scares me that one day my legs will forget to work at all. My family are awesome but I just can't figure out how to move forward and be the wife and mother I used to be. Sorry this is so messy-hope you forgive my raving and venting. Any advice would be appreciated-Hugs -Paula

  • I'm sorry, but I do not know what MBB refers to...perhaps others don't either.
  • I think it probably means Medial Branch Block.
  • Sorry MBB is Medial Branch Block. Last night was at my "pity-party". Feeling frustrated at the delays with the paper-war. Have been sent to so many medical people who all agree my pain is extreme and my physical self is deteriorating rapidly. Yet the w/c/insurers won't approve surgery. I feel invisible as a person-must re-focus and try to pick myself up and be grateful for what I've got. Have hopefully got appointment tomorrow for better pain meds and maybe antidepressents, cos I can't stop crying.
Thank you for listening - Paula
  • I'm so sorry this is happening to you and that you are suffering so much while work comp. acts like complete MORONS! I wish I had some helpful advice... I work for a doctor that sees work comp. patients, although this is not the primary thing he does in his practice. I do all the paperwork and approvals, and I know just how freaking frustrating and horrible they can be. It's disgusting that this happens in our society. As for the RFA, and this is just my opinion, but I'm not sure it would be worth your time if your legs are already forgetting how to work. If they think it will help with pain, that's great, but it worries me a lot that your legs aren't working right. What is wrong with your back? This is just absolutely outrageous! ~X( If I can help you at all, even just lend you some extremely caring eyes/ears, please send me a message! I'm so sorry you are in this situation... >:D< >:D< >:D<

    Much love and understanding,
  • I think you are entitled to a pity party every once in awhile. I am no help when it comes to workman's comp issues. I have no experience with it. I do know all about fusions and it certainly sounds like you are a candidate to have something done. How can they all agree you don't need surgery?

In something like this, will your own insurance not pay to cover a needed surgery? Sorry, I'm asking more questions than helping.

I hope you will be able to get something worked out. You shouldn't have to be in a wheel chair when there is probably some intervention that would return the use of your legs.

    xx Gwennie
  • For all your support and advice, thank you so much.I don't have personal health insurance, had medical care included in my job package.I don't live in the USA and here in NZ we have a bit different system where accidents are involved. What amazes me is all the medical people are great, they all agree that surgery is appropriate. Just the bureaucrats that are making my life more miserable. I really appreciate be able to whine and moan-thank heavens for this wonderful site.
    Hugs n' Love- Paula
  • Ive knocked down to date 4 store displays, and suffered 1 broken toe 2 disslocated shoulders.plus a myrad of bumps and bruises,On really bad days im using my cane but as of two years ago i started using Z-coil shoes. For me they help out quite a bit!!!!!!I dont even have a "normal" pair of shoes anymore!
I havent had a dead leg attack in two years since,I can stand for longer periods of time without the back flareing up then making the twins dance and i can walk a good stride to where my wife has trouble keeping up.
I have a pair for just about every situation and they are the first thing i put on in the morning.I just wish they would make a shower shoe as i still need a chair in the shower.
After the surgery i developed a duck walk toes out when walking which just made my back worse, the shoes actually correct that and need to be fitted to your needs.
I only wish i had money to invest in the company, they are kinda pricey and it would be nice if there was a discount but they are so worth a try,if your like me youve bought the emu creme and the inserts and the pillows and the brace ETC.
They have a 30 money back guarantee if it dosent help,I would recommend trying the slide in kind for around the home and a pair of tennies they have like 18 styles,Sorry no pumps but youll see why.
They can be found at (WWW.Z-coil.com)there youll find a store locator.
I hope this helps!!!Man I really wish i had stock in this company!!!!!Hang in there small steps and dont forget to find time to give yourself credit for what you do have and do!
  • So sorry you are having so much pain and cant gert work comp to allow you the one thing that will help you. Is you lawyer contacting the company to fight their decision? Have you gotten another opinion to fight WC? I had to appeal my insurance company denial of a fusion. I had gone through every conservative treatment with no positive results. I had a state appeal that said I needed another discogram then when that was positive for disc pain I needed a fusion. They denied it again after the state appeal said to do fusion after discogram. I got so upset I got the phone number of the head of the company for the state of Iowa. I called that office and stuff happened. I was approved for the surgery within 4 days. It was out of network, but because it was so obvious I needed it and they had made me endure tons more than I should have, they approved it in network. So sometimes it is worthwhile going to the top. But have all you ducks in a row. Have another opinion for another Dr and then have your lawyer start making calls. It is rediculus that you are going through all of this. If you have tried the injections, and they didnt work, why go through them again? I wish you well. and if I can help or give you advice on what worked and what didnt, please let me know. Anyone that I can help avoid all the hassles I went through, I want to help. Good Luck, >:D<
