Posterior fusion to correct anterior fusion

I had anterior fusion C4567 March 2008. I have been having constant pain for the past 6 or so months. When I bend my head to my chest I lose my voice and have trouble swallowing. I saw a NS and he ordered a CAT Scan. This revealed a halo around the screws which indicated to him that the fusion did not take completely. He has told me that I need to take the plate out from the front and open me up from the back (posterior) and put in another plate there. He told me the total time for the surgery would be around 5 1/2 hours. To say that I am nervous is simply not enough.

Has anyone had this procedure done to them? I would like to know what the recovery is like also. Plus, I cannot tolerate pain medication either.

just posted about her experience with this surgery. Look up her posts and you can see .
  • sorry about your problems. I had a fusion in 2006 and on 6/9/09 had a posterior laminectomy. Which will be the location of your surgery. I wont lie to you its not fun. they open you up in the back of the neck and must go through your trap muscles and thats very painful until the muscles heal. I think the pain from the surgery it self around the spine is less painful then my shoulders and back of neck tissue. If they move any nerves out of the way there could be some arm burning until the inflammation goes away.

  • Sorry to hear you didnt fuse. I am having the same issue. My revision is scheduled for July 23rd, but neuro suggested going anterior again with some synthetic material. I had the option for posterior, but having had a posterior surgery once, I opted for the anterior approach again. The worst part about the posterior was them cutting the muscle back there. I still have issues with that. The neuro did tell me that if he does the posterior it would give me more stability. Good luck and hope yours works this time around. Keep us posted.
