Hi i'm new to this site, had a back injury in Jan 09, tried epidural, no change. The injury is L5/S1, had surgery in Feb 09 and my leg and foot is still numb. Doctor said that nerve is inflamed, I don't get it. Had a prior surgery on L4/L5 3 years ago on the other side of spine and everything went great, but this time no luck. Has anyone had the same problem? Will it get better? I know nobody's a Doc but I still have hope that the numbness will come back.

Thanks for reading,

  • I had my spinal fusion in Feb. and it was a fusion of
my entire back. My left leg from my knee up still feels
as if it is shot full of novacaine - like you feel when
you leave the dentist. My surgeon said the nerves just
aren't all with it yet but my physical therapist says
it may never feel normal again. It's not that there is
no feeling in it, it just feels like it's not really awake.

But - at least my back is straight. If it doesn't come
back to normal I don't think it would be the end of the
world. But I sure notice it. Clothing and sheets or
blankets make it feel irritated for some reason - so I
think I kind of know what you mean.
  • Hi, I have numbness in my big toe and ankle from a large rupture in L5. I had the surgery (Discectomy) but it never changed. I now feel like my disk has shrunken and I have chronic pain all the time.

It's likely it is there to stay. I have got use to it and if the numbness was all I had I'd be great.

  • I have the same problems but, it starts from the neck into my arms and hands back legs and feet. I fall all the time and I feel like a sloppy. The Dr said for me to get used to it because after all the epidurals and nerve root block along with chiro and accupuncture with no relief. He wants to do surgery again but I don't want that either because it does not promise relief long term. I know we are all different but try the above mentioned treatment options you may find relief. Good Luck
  • you just don't know for sure whether numbness will go or stay the same or get worse. i've had 6 surgeries and i've seen some numbness go away, some in different areas of my legs stay the same or get worse.
it's not easy but hang in there and hopefully it will disappear. my advice, and i'm no dr. is to contact your dr. if it gets worse.
hang in there and try to wait it out
    best of luck
  • Thanks for talking about your problem, I don't feel alone. Just went to the doc with a new MRI and he said the nerve was inflamed, but couldn't tell me if the numbness will ever go away or the pain along with it.
