hi newbie here , looking for some advice , my symptoms started few months ago with upper left chest pain which sent me in panic mode and became very anxious my dr was very understanding and i had ecg , treadmill test and echocardiogram all came back fine diagnosed as strees or muscular , continued with pain in upper chest occassionally. About 6 weeks ago i started to get pain in left shoulder and arm going down into hand , pins and needles , burnibng feeling and tightness in my neck , my dr was useless this time and sent me away advising me to take paracetamol , i was walking the floor in tears , seen her 3x and she put me on cocodamol.
It all came to head one weekend saw the emergency out of hurs dr who finally listened and admitted me due to pain and ? diagnosis of trapped nerve .
i spent 4 days in hospital had mri scan which i was told showed
minor bulging in the annuli of the discs c5/6 and c6/7 with two tiny thecal indentations , i have been sent home with gabapentin 300mg 3xday (having terrible dry mouth )and tramadol 50mg 4xday taking paracetamol in between , cant see my own gp for follow up for 2 weeks and waiting for physio which waiting list is 6 weeks , i have booked appt with osteopath to see if he can be of any help , looking for any advice would be very greatful , can these mri finding s be causing my pains ? any other medicatons i could try ? i woill do anything getting desperate

  • Welcome to Spine-Health.

I can give you my opinion, but please keep in mind that I'm not a doctor or even close to one. I do, however, have experience in cervical spine issues as you can see by my signature.

It's amazing how many symptoms can be related to neck issues - arm pain and weakness, arm tingling, muscle pain, neck pain, etc. I believe that at least most of the symptoms you describe certainly can be related to cervical issues.

The advice I'd give is for you to see a spine specialist first. Someone who is fellowship-trained in spine issues and works on the spine exclusively. If you get the all-clear from them, then it's time to try other channels.

I'm sorry you're in so much pain and I hope you find relief soon. Please keep us posted on your progress.

  • Having a "trapped" or compressed C-spine nerve (or nerves) can indeed cause all kinds of symptoms to include pain, numbness, burning, tingling and weakness in your neck, shoulders, arms, hands and at times...your legs.

It looks as though you're on meds to address a variety of symptoms and that's good...as long as they're working that is.

I would suggest that you see a pain management specialist in regard to your situation, and ask him/her to outline a course of action for you.

These are all just my personal opinions but I've been down a similar road at one point, so I can offer some advice based on my own "trapped nerve" experiences. Take care and best wishes -

    Jeff
  • thank you for your replies , i am seeing osteopath tomorow morning so hoping he can help shed some light on my symptoms ,hoping to return to work on weekend but unsure about sitting behind my desk for 7hrs constantly .
although my mri scan showed no compression to spinal cord could i still have trapped nerves with a minor bulge and thecal sac indentations?
  • Hey there Sharon, I agree that you should get in to see a specialist..a neuro Dr. would be best. I am recovering from ACDF surgery for c5-7...I know how you feel. In the short-term...you may want to ask your Dr. for a cervical collar..they can be helpful for pain and to provide some support...hope you feel better soon...feel free to ask any questions or PM me, take care, Olivia
  • Although we have different things wrong with our disc, I have had that chest pain before. My PM doc said you can have that with a herniated disc problem. I also have shoulder blade pain sometimes too. I have the left shoulder, left side of neck, back of neck, left arm and left fingers (fingers tingle, fall asleep, burn).

I must have a compressed nerve or nerves somewhere for whatever reason, that is likely my pain.

I would suggest seeing a neurologist. Since you are having neurological symptoms with your disc stuff. My doc has me on a muscle relaxer, pain killer, anti inflam, and because the pain goes up into my head a headache medication. I also am seeing a psyche doc to get lexapro, cymbalta, klonopin to help with the anxiety and depression that come with chronic pain.

Did this just come out of nowhere? Mine did.

Try ice or heat for now , high back chairs, memory foam pillows, soft collars, and I find walking helps more than sitting long time .

    Hope you feel better.
  • Has anyone had arm numbness after shoulder repair? It is numb top of shoulder and thumb and first 2 fingers. it started 1 week after right shoulder arthroscopy, bone removal and clean out of shoulder. i did have a scalene block. now mri shows c-5-6 compression. i am waiting for radiologist final reading. can a scalene block done wrong cause disc bulge?
  • when i saw the names of your drugs i knew right away you were from across the pond. you are not on the strongest of drugs and your dr could certainly prescribe others if you need more relief. you might check with her on an oral steroid. when i have cervical flareups painkillers dont work well but oral steroids are very effective
i hope you can find relief

  • and arthritis in my neck. Do any of you have pressure with shooting pain in your head when you bend over and stand back up?

    Teresa
  • I also had shoulder surgery and the scalene block. It was great for pain but made me very anxious. I don't think it would cause a problem with the disc though.

I had rotator cuff surgery but now they are thinking that the pain I felt was really more from my herniated disc. Everyone says that disc pain is only down your arm but I think it also effects the shoulder area.

Good Luck with your MRI reading. Ask lots of questions.
  • I have compression or herniation in C 5/6 and C 6/7. The good news is that I have absolutely no symptoms, the bad news is that the neurosurgeon I went to see recommends surgery. The only reason I know about this condition is that I have MS and get brain and cervical spine scans twice a year and it shows up on the MRIs. So surprised that in this trail of comments surgery is not mentioned once. I was also told that there is no physical therapy that can positively impact an injury to this part of the spine
