Hi all - glad I found this site but not sure what is going on with me. I have severe back pain with burning and pain in my right hip as well as pain in my tailbone. I am a 49 yo woman and have fallen three times on my bottom. The first time was about 5 years ago when I slipped on ice and landed on my tailbone. Went to the ER and they could not find any breaks, etc. in the tailbone. Then I fell down some concrete steps and again landed on my tailbone. Another trip to the ER and nothing broken. The last time I fell was on ice again and that was about 2 years ago. My PCP has done X-rays but cannot find anything wrong with my tailbone. I cannot sit for more than an hour at a time due to the pain in my tailbone and hip. My PCP thinks my hip pain is arthritis but has no help for my back or my tailbone. I am taking Soma 4 times a day with no relief as well as vicodin, usually only when the pain is really bad.

I had open heart surgery last year to replace my aortic valve and since then, all this pain has gotten worse. My cardiologists thinks that most of my issues are coming from my spine and not my heart since they just did about $25k worth of tests to rule that out. They want me to see a spine doctor to get it checked. I was in the hospital in April 09 for four day for pain that started in my left shoulder blade and shot down my back and into my chest. They ruled out a heart attack and told me that they were sure it was my spine. I do get some pain shooting down my right leg into my knee but it usually stops there.

Does anyone have any ideas about what could be going on? The Soma's are not working at all and it is getting harder and harder to do anything around my house since just sweeping my bathroom floor puts me in severe pain for hours. Really just not worth the effort to do it. Thanks all.....diana

  • Hello Diana -

Welcome to the Spine-Health Forum...this is a great place to share what's going on, vent when necessary and get advice from folks that have been there and done that through their chronic pain experiences!

After reading your post, it definitely sounds like you have some nerve impingement going on and that can be caused by injury and/or disease within the spinal column/vertebrae. What I would suggest doing is to find yourself a good pain management Doc (your PCP can refer you to one) as they specialize in knowing what to look for and how to treat what they find. I too had some run-around and confusion with my situation, but my PM Doc squared it all away in just one visit and got me on the right track to diagnosis and treatment.

Take care Diana and best wishes to you!

  • Welcome to SH :H I agree with JWriter too that you should get in with a pain specialist who can order an MRI which hopefully will show the cause of your pain. I know how frustrating it is to have this type of pain and I hope they find a way to bring you relief. Take care

Its very interesting that the doctors are telling you its your spine, but none of them has ordered a MRI. That is just one of the diagnostic tests to determine if you have disc related problems.
Like the others have said already, the pain in your hip going down your leg sounds like sciatica.
That would be caused by a disc impinging a nerve root. The other thing that is curious, but since your falls are were landing on your tailbone is thoracic discs. There is a condition called the T4 Syndrome which can mimic a heart attack. When I first started having Thoracic problems, my wife and I both thought I was having a heart attack and was admitted to the hospital. It wasnt until months later after talking to my therapist that she told me about T4 and she demonstrated by pressing real hard on that area and those pains were right there.

You need to see a doctor who specializes in the spine. Take a look at our FAQ , there are several items that talk about different spinal doctors and also the types of questions you should have when you meet a spine specialist

  • Thank you all for your advice. Since I was having so many issues since my OHS, they wanted to rule all heart problems out before going any further. I finally got all my test results yesterday and they were great. So that is a really good feeling. Now, I am going to have to try to find a doctor to start looking at my spine. My PCP is not real good at those kind of things. She seems to think it is my age and alot of arthritis (which I do know I have in my right knee since I have had surgery there 6 times). My orthopedic surgeon for my knee does not do anything with spines so I am not sure where I should start. I live in a small town in Ohio between Cincinnati and Dayton. Does anyone have any ideas about what kind of doctor to call? Today is a pretty bad day since I did sweep floors yesterday. I am in alot of pain and the vicodins are not touching it. I have been using my heating pad, but cannot use it all day long. Also, I started getting pain in my right elbow this last weekend. I can hardly touch it, it is so painful. There is no redness, swelling or anything, but I cannot put it down on an armrest or table. Would this have something to do with my back? Thanks again! diana
  • I went and saw my PCP again today to get a referral to a spine doctor. She just called and I cannot get into to see him until July 20th. I am in so much pain, doesn't matter if I am sitting, standing or laying. I am taking Soma 4 times a day and have vicodin that I can take every 6 hours. Nothing is working. I get out of bed in the morning feeling pretty good, but by the time I take the dog out and make coffee, I am in severe pain already. Is there something else I can take or do to help with the pain so I can get through my days without tears and major pain? diana
  • Hello Diana -

Based on what had been my employment experience in both an acute setting (Emergency Room/E.M.T) and chronic care (Hemo-Dialysis Tech.), I can tell you that Doc's will most recommend that you follow your medication regimen closely (and do not exceed prescribed doses), do not over-do any physical activity (especially lifting and repetitive bending, twisting, etc.), apply ice-packs to areas feeling inflamed (frozen veggies in bags works great), eat a healthy diet of foods and stay hydrated, and take periodic rest breaks (naps if possible)...all while you wait for your July 20th appt. date to arrive. I'm sure you're aware to make an Emergency Room visit should you experience any dramatic increase in pain ANYWHERE or should you become physically ill for any reason. If that should happen, be sure to notify your PCP ASAP as they might then be able to get you in sooner to see the Spine Doctor.

That is just my advice and of course I'm no Physician so take it for what it's worth, but it's the same advice I've heard given hundreds of times and is what I myself prescribe to.

I think that many of us do experience the same "pain routine" as you...waking and feeling alright, only to soon be racked yet again with pain. That's pretty much status quo for chronic pain patients and is ultimately what makes our spinal issues disabling...as it's hard to live a productive existence when beseeched by unrelenting pain so early on in the day. However, hang in there and know that it won't be long before your specialist sets a course of action for you that should bring greater and lasting relief.

Take care Diana and all the best to you!
