-I've had this condition for 2 years. It all started when I went through a period of hyper activity. Where I did lots of exercise with gym and played sports like tennis. At some point I started getting burning pain but I try to fight through it with rest/ice/conservative treatment. At some point it got unbearable and I had to stop.

Now fast forward to today...

-Constant clicking/snapping one one side of cervical spine. Feels like someone is plucking me like they would a guitar string, over and over again repeatedly. The pressure builds slowly over minutes then and releases suddenly in a sudden click/snap. Lieing down makes it worse, Sitting makes it worse, Standing relieves it some what.

-posture is guarding automatically. if I pull my shoulder back & Down the pain goes from a 2/10->9/10 in my mid back area. My posture guards with shoulder moving Up & forward. Shoulder is noticeably lower when unguarded, when muscle tighten up significantly it is level.

-Get spasms/pain traveling down into front of shoulder/bicep & also down into my tricep.

-Basically If I use the arm on the problem side at all it gets messed up the inflammation spreads like wild fire throughout everywhere on upper right side side of neck. So I basically, can't use the arm period.

-Using the good arm will irritate it eventually if i do a constant repetitive motion like keyboard typing/mouse clicking too much.

-Tried chiropractor adjustment where they snapped my neck to relieve some of the tightness, Made it noticeably worse.

-Tried Acupuncture/prolotherapy, ultrasound, massage therapy. It seems like whenever they manage to relieve the tightness in the neck muscles it does the auto pluck guitar string again. Then the huge inflammation / spasms follows. Then it Tightens up significantly/guards.

-Can't even function without advil daily

My GP isn't taking my problem seriously because blood test comes back negative & his tests to see if my arm is paralyzed negative. It's true I usually do not feel significant pain at the moment of doing an activity. But the after effect one day later I'm completely crippled in excruciating pain. Can't even do basic activity like go for a walk, help out around the house, have sex, because every time I do it hurts so badly after that I really rather avoid the activity then suffer the after effect.

Does anyone have any recommendations as far as a spine clinic where they can basically baby sit you and walk you through every stage of the recovery process, diagnosing, surgery if necessary, and the physical exercise rehabilitation.

My life is basically on hold so I have no obligations at all with work, so I am able and willing to devote 100% of my time to recovery.

  • Hi and welcome! I want to let you know you are not alone, and that although we are not doctors and can't diagnose you, we CAN lend support.

Have you seen a specialist? If your insurance/funds allow, think about asking for a referral to an ortho or a neurologist. Be proactive. Unfortunately, you can't always count on your GP "getting" what you are going through. Many doctors hear one complaint, and think they know the answer, and ignore the rest. I had it happen to me for 5 years before finally getting a diagnosis.

Be sure you have told him/her EVERYTHING that is happening with your body. It may just jump start his brain.

In the mean time, take it easy, and as we all say, if it hurts, DON'T DO IT!

I wish you the best! Please, keep us posted!

  • My back sounds just like your neck problem. I had to ask my Dr. for an MRI. Then you'll be able to see what's really going on and get treated by a pain management Dr. or NeuroSurgeon will first let you know what's going on. I'm not a Dr. but it sounds like nerve compression if you have numbness burning in your arm/hand. Although is your Dr giving you muscle relaxants? I would even wear a soft collar to see if that helps while awaiting your MRI. I had whiplash years ago and was taking a muscle relaxant for 9 months. Now I take lyrica, amitriptylline and cymbalta for nerve pain in my lower back. Take care and keep us posted. Charry

  • I live in Canada.

Been getting the run around with my doctor, He is very reluctant to give me scan, telling me to try this, try that, when I know almost certainly it is not going to help. I asked for MRI and he tells me how he can't just give me scan a specialist needs to issue it and that the wait time to see specialist 6 months+ and then there is a 4 month wait time to get the actual MRI so almost 1 year of waiting to get a damn scan. By that time you've lost your mind, if the scan shows nothing you fall into a pit of despair. It's so frustrating makes me just want to go down to US get it done privately and take the financial hit.

I tried taking muscles relaxants which basically do nothing. The only thing that helps is 30 min of ultrasound on my cervical spine, limits the spasm/tingling/weakness symptoms for about 1 week but if I stop the spasm/tingling comes back.

Will problem with cervical spine show up on a CT scan? or is MRI better for this?
  • I have had both done. The doctors usually order a MRI first because its cheaper (less the 2,000) the Ct myleogram is over 4,000. In Canada your government controls any health care huh? Are you close to the USA border? I would go to the Emergency Room when your pain is so severe you can't stand it. I would tell you to take anti inflams but your already doing that. Swimming helps me. Pain level is zero when I am in the pool. As far as a diagnoses i am not a doctor, It sounds like its spine related.
