What is going on with my neck

For the past 5 days my neck has been bothering me. Every 90 seconds or so I feel the urge to stretch it or crack it because it is bothering me. It is not in terrible pain but after 90 seconds my neck feels like I have been sitting at my computer for 3 hours for no reason. This occurs throughout the day. It does not affect me sleeping however. Do you know what this could be?? I also hear grinding when I rotate my neck and I would it cracks 50 percent of the time when I stretch/rotate it. Any advice?? It is getting really annoying...Could this be DDD?? I am only 22 years old by the way. I also just bought a glucosamine/chrondroitin complex. Should this help at all? Is there anything else I can take to help the pain and stop me from

I also hurt my lower back 3 months ago and couldn't do anything for about a week but it has been feeling great the past 21 days so I am almost 100 percent sure the 2 are not related.

  • from DDD, to bone spurs, to a herniated disc. You really should see a doctor and get an MRI done. My neck problems started in my 30's, but got better after doing therapy, then would act up throughout time. I'm 44 and had an ACDF C5/6 on 06/15. I had lots of bone spurs and a blown disc.

The only way to know is to get an MRI to see the inside of your spine. I program and am a supervisor so I know what it's like to sit at the computer all day everyday. I am worried about returning to work myself. Tight muscles can cause some of the problems you are having. Maybe try ice or heat or get a light muscle relaxer from your doctor to try.

The crunching/grinding sound when you rotate is either the discs or the bones. Also, know that you can tear or herniate a disc without being in extreme pain. It all depends on the person, the condition of the disc, and the position of the vertebras.

See a doctor and get it checked.
  • cracking grinding stiffness if given a rest should go away. you don't have serious symptoms. if it gets worse see your primary dr. first to see if specialist needed. don't worry tendons snap but that doesn't mean it's serious
    best of luck...pete
  • Thanks guys. I would go see a doctor but I do not have insurance right now. I plan on getting it in August through my school. Hopefully it goes away before then.
  • Should I stop trying to stretch my neck? Every 30 seconds it gets uncomfortable and I have to stretch my neck forward and back to stretch it even though it is not doing much help. Does anyone know any other treatments that can help me out. The hot/cold hasnt helped too much.I have used icy hot and Biofreeze.
  • Sometimes we can't stop our reactions to the pain. I would thing doing pilates and stretching out your arms, shoulders, and back would help. Are you stressed too? Maybe go swimming, find a hot tub, work out at a gym, but no hard weights, stay on the light side. Shoulder rolls and just reaching up to the sky with both arms sometimes helps me.

I'm sorry that you don't have insurance. To be sure of what you have, you really do need to see a doctor. I hope you find some stretches or something that will relieve your muscle spasms. Sounds like the neck muscles are really tightening. Some chiropractors will take you without insurance and only charge you like $30 or $40 each visit. They will do tens unit or ultrasound treatments and other things that will help your muscles. I wouldn't want one popping my neck, but I have had that done before. They all kept saying they could fix me and put my neck back in line and all of that. Not sure any of it helped or hurt me.
  • Thanks. I wil definitely try swimming, hot tub and stretching my shoulders, nack arms, etc.. I am definitely a bit stressed this month. As I am set to graduate and have also been studying night and day for the GMAT. Maybe that has also contributed.
