Haven't posted here since the *ahem* succesful fusion about 18 months ago when I abandoned the board like so many fortunate ones!

Now I'm having some sciatic pain on the left side (no where near what it was). It really hits when sitting/riding in car and is about a 6 on the pain scale. Goes away when I'm walking/exercising or laying down. I've had it about 2 weeks now ~ originally thought it was a pulled hamstring, but reality hit.

Anyone out there experience pain 18 mos after fusion? Any suggestions? I am fairly active and have been pain free up til about now.

L4-5 fusion December '07 for: Grade 1 spondy, severely arthritic facet joints, bulging disc, central/lateral stenosis (main problem "we" think).

  • Sorry for the reason you have returned. Cute baby, by the way....

When you said it felt like a tight hamstring, I immediately thought of a herniated disk. My husband, who is a runner, many years ago ruptured a lumbar disk. For months before it ruptured, I would catch him absent-mindedly rubbing the back of his thigh. It felt like a tight hamstring. This went on for several months until he awakened the morning before Christmas and could not get out of bed. The disk had ruptured overnight, without him even realizing it.

I would guess that the car seat just hits your thigh in a way that it aggravates that sciatic nerve. It is possible that it is more stenosis setting in and pressing on a nerve.

I had the same surgery as you, for the same reasons, in Jan '08 and I am basically right back where I was prior to surgery. In my case, it is a nerve that is hyperactive!

Guess a call to the surgeon is in order if it doesn't resolve by itself soon.

    xx Gwennie
