second opinion on herniated discs

Hi! I am new here , and was recently diagnosed by MRI with herniated discs at L3 and L5, with severe back/hip pain in left leg and some numbness in right leg. It has been 2 months. The ortho Dr. said I need surgery but was unsure which one needed done so he sent me to the surgeon (said epidural shots wouldn't help and I needed surgery). Went to surgeon and after hemming and hawing, said I needed shots, not surgery! Any input? Should I get a second opinion?

  • Hi, and welcome! It's never a bad idea to get a second, third, fourth opinion. It's shouldn't even give you a second thought to get it if two doctors are telling you two different things. Get another opinion! However, I don't believe it could hurt to get the shots either, so if your ns says to get the shots, get them AND THEN GET ANOTHER OPINION! This is just my opinion :p

Good luck, and let us know how it goes! >:D<
  • I am really sorry to hear of your pain and can unfortunately relate to your condition. If you are not confident or comfortable with what you are told you should definitely get another opinion. We have not seen your MRI (and could not interpret it anyway) or examined you and are not doctors (so can only give opinions) but even with same condition your herniation may be worse and your ability to recuperate different. I personally found all the articles (and videos) on herniated disks on this site very reassuring and up till now found the doctors matched what I read (and surgery not recommended to date) so have been comfortable. I did exchange personal messages with another member and they herniated after me and already back to work whereas I am still largely immobile (showing first significant signs of recovery in last few days, after 6 weeks) and you are at 8 weeks so we all heal (or not) at different rates.

I suspect you have been essentially on a conservative treatment (lots of pain medications and rest). Have you been medicated (I was put on narcotics) and really rested (I was told not to do anything that hurt and recently told by neurologist that if the 3 minute walk to Physiotherapist hurt then drop that as well).

If surgeon is putting off and trying options rather than surgery I would personally regard that as positive. Hopefully other members can advise you on the shots. It looks like you have gone from family doctor to an Orthopedic doctor who referred to a surgeon (Neuro Surgeon or Orthopedic surgeon) but were these spine/back specialists? Have you seen any improvement in the 8 weeks?

It would be extremely difficult for you to be positive after 8 weeks of severe pain and if on medication may be effecting your decision making process as well. As I started, if not comfortable then get another opinion. I wish you lots of luck and from personal experience know you will get support on this site! Please continue to make every effort to stay strong and think through what is happening is best for you.

    Best wishes >:D<
