Numb Spots- could it be related to compressed nerves?

  • i'm pete...welcome to spine health.
not being a dr. i am giving you a laymans opinion. i know the big toe has a lot to do with nerves around L5. do you have weakness also in that toe. i had surgery on l5 and they fixed my problems with the toe.
i doubt the shoulder is related to that L5 problem. shoulder pain would be more associated with neck nerve pressure. best you see a spinal surgeon or two for opinion.
    good luck,
  • for the reply- I see my neurosurgeon next Thurday (7/23) I just may give her a call this afternoon- I just notice the shoulder this morning. Almost feels like weakness in my right arm?????????????? Weird...

    Thanks again Pete! ;p)
  • I am not a doctor either but I have had cervical and lumbar fusions for several reasons one of which was pinched nerves in both areas. The cervical fusion took care of the shoulder, arm and hand pain and numbness. The lumbar fusions are taking care of the pain and the numbness in the leg and yes, left big toe. The lumbar fusion also caused me to have recurring numbness in my shoulder only because it caused me to walk differently which caused me to tighten my shoulders. When my PT worked those muscles in my shoulder, that got rid of the numbness this time around.
So your doc's will help you find the path through this! Hang in there.

  • Have you looked at any Dermatome maps? They show what nerves affect what areas of your body.

Just do a Google Image search for 'Dermatome Map'

what I know personally - the toe could be related but the shoulder is weird - not the right area of the body to correspond with where you say you've got spine issues.

    ...best of luck
