AxiaLIF - popping noises

I had the AxiaLIF done on L5 S1 at the end of April '09. I now have popping noises (like when you have your back popped by a chiropractor) at that disc level when I move certain ways and it feels like the screw might be moving around. Does this happen to anyone else who has had the surgery? I will be asking my doc this question, but I wondered if this is normal.

  • I have popping noises in my lower back after my PLIF last December. I had MRI and hardware is ok
  • I have popping noises that started a couple of months after L5/S1 fusion. I didn't have the axilif. I asked my surgeon about it and he said he never heard of it. I later found out I have 2 fratured screws but 2nd surgeon I seen wasn't sure it that was causing the popping noise or not.
  • Daina,

I am seeing a neuro tomorrow and he is big on AxialIf over traditional fusion. I was thinking about this last night. The threaded rod that goes between the discs that is used to set the spacing. It threads into the bone between S1 and L5. The top of it sits right under the disc at L4-L5. I was wondering if it would move. Also you get ether a single screw into each facet. The other option is 2 screws and a bar on each side.

I was thinking if any of that hardware tugs the bone where the threads of the screws go through. You might get creaking or popping. The worst would be the threads of the screws pull out of the hole. If the bone is brittle and/or constant pressure on the screw in the direction of the threads. It would be like constantly pulling on the head of a screw. In metal it would hold well, in wood it would worm its way loose. So how good do bones hold SS or TI screws.

Look at the website from the company who actually makes the product. http://www.trans1.com/
