I know I have chatted with a few of you since my laminectomy/discectomy on July 2oth because i have had problems on the opposite side of where the surgery was performed. Thank you so much to so many of you who have calmed my fears and offered advice.
I just want to give a quick up-date as I am still confused and not really sure where I am headed, and by the sounds of things, a few that I have chatted with are in the same boat as myself sharing the same fears and concerns.
I had a herniated disc at L5-S1, I told the surgeon prior to op that I occassionally had sciatic pain on the left but not often. All my syptoms were really bad on my right side. After surgery I was immediately numb on the outside of my left leg below my knee and the outside of my foot. At my post op visit I told my surgeon about the left sided pain in my back and the left sided numbness. He told me he did not do anything on my left side, he looked and left it alone!! He put me on prednisone for 10 days which is done now for post op swelling and numbness. However my symptoms on my left side have got worse not better. The sciatic pain running down that side come and go in severity but I am permanently numb and tingling from the knee down all the way through my foot. it doesn't stop! If is was just due to post op swelling, wouldn't it be better now after 10 days of prednisone and not worse??
I also understand that strange new symptoms can appear after surgery since they have been in there messing things around etc, the surgeon told me I have sensitve nerves, but my concern is that its getting worse, lasting longer, or is this just normal "nerve" behavior??? I think we just want reassurance that everything is ok??? My surgeon said he could do an MRI but up to 3 months after surgery it will only show fluid????? Does this mean I have to wait and see if I am still having the symptoms in 3 months from now?
The right side that was worked on during surgery is wonderful, no pain, no numbness and no tingling, so i do feel the surgery was a success so i don't understand why I am having such bother on the side that was NOT operated on unless its a new problem????
I got to PT in an hour, I am not sure if my therapist will work with me, he refused on Monday due to my new pain, but I go back to work on Monday so I am going to try and borrow a TENS machine and just see if he'll give me some exercises to do that may help decrease my discomfort.
Any suggestions, similar experiences, advice is much appreciated, I know this is not just me out there that this is happening to so i hope this will give others some help aswell.
P.S. If its just patience I need, I guess I am not very good at that!!! LOL
