Hi my friends,

It has been awhile since I have been on here.I hope all is going well and is getting better.

I am writing on here because of a problem I have been having since back surgery, and wondering if any of you have or are experiencing this problem I am now faced with, and if you have any suggestions for me.

Since back surgery I have had pain developing in my right hip. I had back surgery a little over a year ago. Well over the past year I would feel the pain in my hip thinking maybe because my back is still healing, well now it is constant pain, and it cramps up at times and really hurts.

My surgeon retired where I live in California, and all the other surgeons moved out of my area to other states because the money in Cali right now is in the red so to speak. We have only one surgeon in our area and it is like months of waiting to get into see them.

Have any of you experienced hip pain after surgery? If you did, what have you done about it?

  • Hi Jeanie,

I would go back and get exaimed again.. In my opinion, you shouldnt have that pain so long after theatre.
I have had 3 Lumbar op's the first being a Lamienctomy.
It took me, if im being honest several mths (8-10 wks) to feel almost human again.

Obviously I had more pain which resulted in me returning to the NS and it was always someting else.
    Am I lucky or what?

Normally you would have the hip (Sciatic Nerve) pain pre-op. In all my cases when I had pain return, it was always something else.

After your op did all the pain disappear or was that Sciatic Nerve pain still there. If it has been there for almost a year, Id have been back having another MRI to ensure all went well with the surgery.
Your pain should have almost disappeared in 2/3 mths.

As everyone in here says - Im not a DR
(nor would i, I have 2 sisters who are nurses and thats bad enough lol) Im only passing on what happened in my case.

Wouldnt do you any harm to have it checked out.
If your Dr isnt happy about it - remind him that you pay his wages, and find another(lol)

Please let me know what happens
    Best of luck hun,

    Love from Scotland and me

  • What area of your spine was operated on and what type of surgery did you have? Did you have hip pain prior to surgery, or is this all new and different? If so, when did it start? Do you have any pain in the buttocks area or is it only in the hip? Just one side?

I look forward to hearing back from you.
  • Hi Gwinnie17

I had lower lumbar spine surgery. In August of 2007 then had another surgery in 2008 for one of the rods to be taken out because it was causing so much pain. The rest of the hardware is still in my spine because they put in a facet joint bracket in my spine.

Anyway the pain did not start right away in fact I was feeling better. Well then almost 8 or 9 months ago I started to feel pain in hip joint. I also feel pain in my buttocks as well.

My surgeon retired in April and the rest of the surgeons in my area moved to another state because here in Cali medical is being cut.We have only one surgeon and it takes months to get into see him. I am actually planning on moving to another state where I can get the medical attention I need.

Thanks if you have any info that would be helpful.

    Have a wonderful day
  • I'm sorry that I don't have more concrete information for you. But the reason I was asking the questions is because many people with lower lumbar issues often get what they assume is hip pain but in reality it is caused by issues generated at L4-5 or L5-S1.

If you look at an atlas of the body you will see that just out from the hip socket there is an attachment point where a number of muscles and ligaments converge. They all run in bands across the buttocks from the sacral area to what feels like "the hip." One of these is located where the sciatic nerve runs right beneath it. If the muscle is tensed or inflamed, it can cause pains similar to what one feels with a herniated or ruptured disc.

Unless there is something glaringly obvious that is wrong with your spine, it may take some detective work to find the source of your pain. In my experience, surgeons are good at finding something that needs surgical repair, but don't always have the interest in or patience to find something less obvious.

Have you ever seen a doctor of physical medicine and rehabilitation (physiatrist)? Some of them specialize in orthopedic issues and can be found in a spine clinic or the offices with a spinal specialist.

I suppose you do need a new MRI to rule out any new disc problem, stenosis, etc. Any type of doctor could order this for you. If nothing new is found, then you might want to look for a top-notch physical therapist or chiropractor who could look to see if you might have one of these attachment problems. I'm not very fond of chiropractors, but some are very good at diagnosing problems with soft tissue that effect the spine.

Another possibility: perhaps some piece of hardware in your spine has come loose.

Sorry I'm not much help. It seems extreme to have to move to find some answers!

Good luck and please keep us posted on your situation.

    xx Gwennie
  • Hi Jeanie,
I had lumbar surgery 20 months ago and I experienced the same hip pain at about the one year mark as well. I had surgery to get rid of major sciatic pain on the right side. Hip pain is on the left. It first felt like a muscle pull and gradually increased to major pain in the front of the thigh and around the hip with every step. My PT seems to think it is the muscles and tendons that have atrophied due to compensating for the pain on the right side for so long. I have been working to stretch the area getting deep massage (ouch!!!) and ultrasound weekly as well as doing daily stretches in the area. I also do daily sessions in the gym on the stationary bike and the cross trainer. Some days I think we are on the right track and other days I worry about possible hip problems.

If you have a physio person you might get them to check this out. In any case, I wish you all the best in finding a solution. Jaycey
  • Thank you for your responses. I am moving not just because of medical doctors but for other reasons as well. But it is not good that I live in an area where all the doctors are moving because of all the cuts due to the Economy. I personally need to be where I can get some medical treatment.

The hip cramps and pops that is why I was thinking it was a hip problem. The other day I swung my leg over a bike and man it popped then cramped and I thought man this is getting worse, I could hardly walk for the rest of the day I was in great pain the whole day.So it does not just hurt it pops at times and cramps like a charlie horse do you get these symptoms Jayce?

    Thanks again
