:H I am so glad that I have found this site, I am 57yo now. My intro-post will be quite extensive due to having quite a history of acc., car wrecks etc. that has caused alot of the problems and pain 24/7 that I live with now, I do apoligize. I like all of you, am not new to pain, but thank God I have a high pain tolerance. I grew up as a Texas born country girl, been on a horse from age of three and used to train horses which caused me many injuries (even tho I had high skills), namely torn ACL, ruptured R.ovary etc. In 1966, I was riding bareback, mare was going too fast as we approached fence, we flipped over top of fence. I was told by onlookers later, that when I landed, I landed on top of my head and body flipped over (this knocked me out) 8} For horse-lovers like me(horse ok). I developed neck pain and migraines, then in 1971 was involved in rear-end car-wreck. My ex and I were sitting at red-light in 1968 Dodge Charger one night, when a drunk in a big Caddy going approx. 60-70mph.hit us from behind. It knocked us clear across intersection, down that road and crunched our trunk up to back glass, totaled our car-he went to jail. L) Migraines and pain increased, that same year, I tore ligaments and muscles R.side lower back. I went to chiropractor, and Ortho :B wanted to do a myelogram. Supposed to be 1-2 days in hospital, he hit nerves (pain, numbness both legs) In 1971, they used oily dye and pt. was to drink lots of fluids, lie flat for 24hrs. I tried, but started  and pressure in head so severe, could feel veins dilated over areas of head, forehead, I just kept  , Dr. gave morphine/pain, lost 10lbs.spent week in hospital. We lived in Houston then, had to ride home, lying flat and still  It took a mo.to get better. ~X( During that stage of my life, had been denied many good jobs(had college-ed) couldn't pass pre-empl. physical due to arm weakness, also migraines, pain increased. I always liked a physical-type job, probably wore my body out and am paying for it now. Its 1998,working in Quality-Assurance at local Co. I was recovering from 1st arthroscopy L.knee(no P.T.) went back to work 3 wks later. Two co-worker and I moved 465lbs. of mat'l over to scales, I injured R.knee(actually sustained R.inguinal hernia,3 bulging discs lower back and probably did not help my neck any either. I only claimed R.knee inj. and had arthroscopy R.knee 1yr. later. Trying to avoid surgery, already had 1 surgical knee, other injuries did not become so evident till later and I put 2+2 together X( Dealing with WC very stressful also ended losing job :''( My Ortho Dr. would not let me go back to work on concrete floor, they got X( OOPS! made a mistake on year, not 1998, it was 2001, date of surgery Oct.2002, the Ortho ended up sending me to Pain Specialist, he diagnosed me with RSD. He gave me some kind of block?, put me on Gabapentin 300mg.x3, Kadian 20mg.x2 and Lidoderm patches and talked to me about a morphine-implant. NO WAY! I used to have EXTREME PAIN when I drove to Ft.Worth (100mi.away) ~X( (scale 10+), but not pain if short-distance. I drove a Cadillac Sedan DeVille,my Family Dr. discovered I had R.inguinal hernia, I had this repaired,(2 mesh,8" incision) in July 2002, lost job in Oct.2002, I think they thought I was a malingerer =(( I now drive a large SUV and don't encounter as much pain if I drive 100mi, course I do take pain pills and muscle-relaxers!?! I'm just about thru =D> (|: Then, in Feb.2003,R.knee still tender from Oct.2002 surgery, I was bent down on L.knee, R.knee raised up, I reached across my body with R.arm to retrieve daughters' shoes from under her bed, I felt like bolt of lightening struck from base of head, run down spine and down R.leg to foot. Pain sooo INTENSE, knocked breath out of me and I fell to floor. As I lay there contemplating whether to call ambulance (home alone and no phone in room ATT) I got up,took pp,went to bed at 4:00PM, terrible PAIN, running 104temp,talking out of my head. Bed linens soaked daily, husband would get me up, take shower, change bed and they would laugh at things I would say due to delirium =)) I laid there for 5 days before going to doctor, lips blue, pneumonia and severely dehydrated, spent 6 days in hospital. Took 2mo.to rid body of pneumo, still had intense burning pain and muscle-spasms of back, neck (family apoligized, did not know I was so serious CRITICAL COND.) I went to Neurologist, he ordered MRI of neck, lower back,nerve-conduct. and E--? tests. Tests showed I had carpal-tunnel syndrome both hands, right worse, so had it repaired, also radiculopathy, fibromyalgia. Cervical MRI showed SEVERE CHANGES OF DDD,broad-based posterior osteophytic ridge results in moderate spinal stenosis with spinal canal narrowed to approx. 8mm. Uncovertebral and facet joint osteophytes result in bilateralnarrowing of neural foramina, worse on R. secondary to asymmetric posterior osteophyte C5-C6, C6-C7 the same, but also has a disc bulge. Neurologist tells me I have 2 herniated discs (C5-C6, C6-C7) spinal stenosis, cervical spondylosis with myelopathy, severe DDD. He also says normal spinal canal >15mm, mine is compressed to 8mm., later MRI different Radiologist says SPINAL CORD FLATTENED IN FRONT AND ON BOTH SIDES also compressed 8mm. Neuro says if sp.c. compresses to 5-6mm, could wake up some morning and be paralyzed from neck down. He says my spine BAD, 3 bulging discs L3,L4,L5 and S1, I have lost 1" in H. He has talked to me about cervical fusion 2 level, and later will need 3 level fusion lower back. I have been seeing him since April 2003, when my pain level gets too bad, I have ESI shots in neck, lower back and in Fall 2004, had series ESI with fluoroscopy from base of head-down as low as he could go. In Jan.2005, I had extensive DVTs from pelvic area down R.leg, PTT 107, normal is 18-32,CRITICAL COND. in ICU, had umbrella-implant in venae-cava to catch future blood-clots and I am 2mm. short of Osteoporosis of lower spine, also have trigger-point inject. Because of blood clot history, smoking (have slowed-down) I'm worried about failure of fusion, if I did it, is it best to use my own bone from hip or use cadaver bone? Thru the yrs. I have talked to MANY people who have had fusion and probably 75-80%, says they wished they had never had surgery, more pain now!! Neuro currently has me on Pain Mgt., but is willing to send me to ANY NS or Ortho in Dallas-Ft.Worth area I would choose or he recogmends. I'm also :/ as Neuro diagnosis of herniated discs, he said they ruptured centrally instead of laterally. He said if I had called ambulance when laying in floor and he could have given me Medrol Pak (in hosp. with pneumo 2003) this would have helped. I asked my Dr. why he didn't call in Neuro, he said he was busy trying to keep me from dying from pneumo! O:) on my shoulders. :jawdrop: OK, sorry this has taken so long to relate I) but felt that I needed to explain alot about past acc. and health probs. Current meds--Gabapentin 300mgx3, Lexapro 20mgx1, Requip 1mg.x1 (restless-leg), Robaxin 750mg.x4, HydrocodoneAPAP 10-500 5-6 a day--this dulls the pain, does not take it away + ESI and Trigger-point inject. when pain level gets too high. My fear if I have fusion, I may find myself on morphine or something stronger and more addicting than Hydrocodone. Neuro says I don't have addictive-personality,but will still have to take meds even after surgery :/ , but don't want to end up paralyzed either. I am on SS Disability, since Nov. 2003, applied 1st time WITHOUT LAWYER, expected to have to fight for it, but was approved FIRST TIME. Sorry again for length of intro letter, I'd love to hear from anyone and would like to have some buddies. >:D< :H

  • hi chun...all i can say is you been beat up and you need fixin...i'd think you would want to be out of the danger of paralysis so go for the fusion...get out of danger and if pain still bad just bite the bullet. you dont have much choice. ...oh by the way take care of yourself....pete

  • Welcome to SH :H You've been through so much and I'm glad you shared your story with us. We're happy to have you onboard. Take care O:)
  • Hey,thanks for responding to my intro, I know it was lengthy. Sorry I was late getting back to you, Thurs. 8/27/09, I saw my Neuro and got a steroid inj. L4-L5. Still having pain afterwards, so guess this one isn't working?! If I get on computor for any length of time, have to wear my foam neck brace, also have a back brace. Doc said ok to wear, just not 2 long at a time. I've been reading posts about artificial discs, M6-C namely. Seems to have some good results, just don't know if I would be a candidate, will have to ask Doc. I just don't want to follow your footsteps (1 surgery leading to another) :''( Did a NS or Ortho do your surgeries or both? Are you on Pain Mngt. now? I know I have 2 surgical knees and still have probs and pain, Ortho told me that I will have to have total knee replacemnt L.knee (bone-2-bone 2 places after surgery) but try to delay as long as I can. Hey, did you just have BD, if so Happy belated Birthday! I have a BD coming up 9/19/09, I bought a sable Pekinese in 10-08, she has the same BD as myself <:P lol Guess I'll get her some treats, she's my Baby! Would like to add you to my Buddylist, since you were 1st to reply, hope you are doing ok. >:D< :H
  • Hey, thanks for reply to my lengthy intro, sorry I was late in my reply. I saw my Neuro on 8/27, had a steroid inj. of L4-L5 due to sciatic pain/groin pain/back pain, so far still have pain, sooo guess it didn't work!! Have you had luck with laminectomy, or still in alot of pain? Hope it helped and pain didn't increase. I'd like to add you to my Buddylist, since you were 2nd to reply? Thanks for the welcome! >:D< :H
  • Thanks for reply to my lengthy intro, yeah I was always active, so if one does more than sit on sofa guess acc. will happen. Sorry I was late in my reply, but on 8/27, saw my Neuro and had steroid inj. L4-L5, have not had pain relief so far, so guess it didn't work this time. :( I noticed you have a little dog, they sure give you alot of luv, don't they? I bought a sable Pekinese 10-08, she was born on my BD, 9-19 <:P , guess I'll have to get her some treats, she's my shadow. I'm currently on Pain Mngt. and worried that if I have some kind of surgery (fusion) that after reading MANY posts that 1 surgery leads to another, so trying to do research, talk to other patients, other Spineys and will get 2nd and 3rd opinion before going under knife. Thanks for the welcome and would like to add you to my Buddylist, I have super nasty nerve pain also, and if I don't take Gabapentin 300mg.x3 nightly, I can sure tell the difference. I have radicular pain, neuropathy of legs AND Morton's Neuroma (bundle of nerves) L.foot. ~X( Hope you have luck with Pain Mngt, let me know how it turns out, O.K. I am so glad I joined forum. >:D< :H
  • Thanks for the welcome, yeah guess if you're active early in life and acc. happen, your body gets wore out. You didn't post any surgeries or damage, so don't quite know how to respond. I still have problem just sitting in recliner, have to be doing SOMETHING! If I do 2 much (act stupid) regret it next day, my Neuro just shakes his head and tells me slow down. :O My body usually tells me fairly quickly, but thanks to Pain Mngt. I have SOME quality of life, what's the alternative?!!! :))( Would like to add you to my Buddylist if ok. >:D< :H
  • Thanks for the welcome, sorry my intro was so lengthy, but guess if one is very active accs.will happen. I've had O:) on my shoulders for a long time, but that's better than the alternative?!! I guess God isn't ready for me yet. I noticed you have a cute dog, I bought a sable Pekinese 10-08, she has same BD as myself, 9/19 <:P Guess I'll have to buy her some treats, she's my shadow. Sounds like you have been thru quite alot and still left with PAIN. I plan to do alot of research, talk to patients, spiney friends and have 2 or 3 opinions from Ortho and Neuro-surg. before I go under the knife. We both have DDD, facet arthropathy,DJD and OA, so would like to add you to my Buddylist, ok? Hope you are not in 2 much pain tonight >:D< :H
  • Welcome to our forum Chun :)))

Wow you've definitely been through the mill and unfortunately still suffering heaps. There's lots of good people here who are willing to give support.

There are a lot of successful fusion experiences here - one posted here today by Sandra.

I had unsuccessful decompression surgery last year and booked in for an anterior fusion in 6 weeks.

Pekinese are beautiful dogs. I've got two Labrador girls and love them to bits.
