i know this wont apply to most people on here .but please feel free to add you comments anyway ,in the UK if you are ill you are put on incapacity benefit now this can be short term or long term .i am on long term .back in the old days when i was put on it ,,it was doctor driven basically what he said went .now the government have farmed out the who gets and who does not get benefit on a points scheme ..it is going to be a hell hole nightwear .let me try to explain .one of the tests is ..can you turn on a tap? and can you pour a pint of milk> ? now of the answer is yes ..they deem that you are fit to work !!! now what bearing has that got to people like me with back pain .there was a lady on UK TV last night ans she was lay in her chair and she takes Oxycontin walks with crutches etc and they want her to work ..the woman is crippled with arthritis!! i think that is is disgusting..this new points system is for all new claimants so i am safe until next April when all existing claimants are to be tested ..the government want all of us off the sick and back in to some kind of work they recon that we can all do something ,,i can say with hand on heart that i could not hold down a job .but if things go the way the government want it to go i will loose my benefit and we could end up loosing the house.there's not enough work for healthy people let along sick people ..incapacity benefit is meant to be for people that are incapacitated and can't do they work .i am also on disability living benefit ..this benefit is to help me with the extra cost of being disabled ..like money for electrodes and batteries for my acticare money for specialist stuff like electric beds and chairs and medication and heating .as i am in the house all the time our heating bill as very high .and to keep my car on the road ..as you know i am ill and in pain all the time .but if things go the way i think that are going to go i could find myself back on the work market in the next few months !!!!!!!!! i just could not do it .and the worst thing about this madness is your doctor have no say in the matter ..i think the idea was from the records left over from the third reich

  • I think they are starting to bring the same testing in in Ireland . A friend of mine has chronic back pain and they made her get up and down from sitting in a chair and then they made her walk around for five minutes and they deemed her fit to work. It is ridiculous.
  • its a paper exercise .private companies getting rich whilst the sick get sicker .i am appalled

  • Holy cow, I am having trouble wrapping my head around this one, its just insane. What on earth does pouring milk have to do with your ability to work? It seems cruel to me. Heres to hoping the "Powers That Be" will come to their senses and change back to letting Doctors do the judging.
  • To bad that they arent made feel what we do on a daily basis. If they had the pain for even one day they would be in tears. Pouring milk or sitting or even walking for 5 minutes has nothing to do with being disabled. I have a bad neck which in turn affects my arms and shoulders, but i can pour milk. My job actually required me to work with food and pour milk on occasion and milk never had anything to do with my disabilities. Im sorry you may lose your benefits thats terrible. And your house all because of their stupidity? Who are they to dicide who is disabled and who isnt. Only doctors can make that determination and i definately dont think they will list cant pour milk as a disability and if i remember correctly its not listed on the disability form. Is there a new food section on those forms that no one got? Like cant pour milk cant pick up a tomato? kidding. Sorry about all this, but keep us posted. At least you have til april but all the stress waiting it out is gonna drive you crazy or it would me.

  • my 8 year old can't pour milk usually without spilling it, does that mean he shouldn't be going to school because he is disabled? I am so sorry straker. That is so unfair. It's terrible that you now have to face all this on top of everything else. I am in the process of applying for disability here in the states, and it's not easy. I'm pretty sure I will get denied because I can lift my leg. It doesn't matter the intense pain I get from sitting or standing too long, or the fact that if I do anything unassisted I am in tears. I can lift my leg, so I can work 8 eight hours a day. :(

Good luck with everything. At least you have until April to figure things out.

  • X( at the moment i am on sick leave, don't know how long my company will carry on paying me. i have read the notes on this new benefit, it stinks, you have to score 15 points to be able to get it, unless you are in a wheelchair and unable to wipe your own bottom you won't get it, or so it comes across.
if we were able to work we wouldn't have given up the jobs we have (had), i have talked to my boss about am i able to come back part time or reduced duties, yeah right, NO i can't, i can barely stand or walk without severe pain, sitting is even worse.
my job is in pharmacy, dispensing peoples meds, climbing up and reaching for things, bending down and picking things up, need another member of staff to help me get back on my feet, tea break for everyone else, i go an lie on the floor in the office.one of the reasons im off sick is that i was not taking all my pain meds as i could not concentate so i tried to struggle through, picked totally the wrong meds, if pharmacist had not checked i could have killed that patient.
take pain meds cant concentrate, dont take pain meds cant concentrate. no win situation.
i worked so hard to get where i was in my job, i don't want to give it up but my body is telling me i have to.
but because i can pour some milk i won't get benefits, its wrong, wrong, wrong !!!!!!
What jobs do they want us to do ?
what company would even offer us a job ? surely they would not be covered by insurance if we got worse while working for them ? does the government care ?
    NO THEY DON'T,
it makes me so sad and angry, im lucky enough that my husband has a job but ive worked my whole life only to be losing my job because my stupid back cant take it anymore.

  • its was the third program about getting people back to work .and it was the one that concerned me and anyone else in the UK that is on the sick..our government has farmed out /what used to be the doctors job to a french company !!.there was a young man on last nights program and he had a back operation {you could see the scar on his back and you could see the pain on his face} when he was asked to bend forward as far he could .and on this he was declared fit to work!!! this young man takes DF118 pain killers and is in loads of pain .and they wanted him off the sick and in a job ..the lad was not the brightest ,,and the kind off work he could have done{in the past} like warehouse work and building site work ..he could no longer do it .but they wanting him to do office work ..the lad could not sit down !! he like me ..had to be in a recline or lay down position .i was upset for the lad .but bloody annoyed with the system and this company that our government is using..all they are interested in is money getting people off the sick and in to work because this company gets payed from out r government...its not been voted it ..the crafty basxxxrd have just slotted this one in on the sly..now on the other hand there are people out there that are taking the pi55!! and they work for cash inn hand and also claim sick money ..now they should be taken from the sick list ..but for gods sake leave genuine sick people like me alone.the annoying thing is they done even take into consideration your doctor input {how the hell can they asses you on a 15 minute interview } my doctor has a more accurate picture on me as he manages my health and has done so for the last 30 years!!..surely he is the man to tell if i am fit for work or not {and in his opinion i will never work again}..reading this you may think that i am anti work ..well i am not .when i was fit and working i worked 10 hours 6 days a week and i never took a day off sick .i love work but now work would kill me .just getting around the house is hard work ..there are certain people that will never work again and i am one of them.i never wanted this but this is how it has turned out .i am so annoyed about this because ones personal circumstances are not taken into account and you are just lumped together with ever one else.they don't have the individual health as there main concern they just see you as money and if they could get me off the sick after 14 years and in full time employment that would be a big bonus in there pocket ..sod my health problem .they are not interested at all..they are using car sale people to get work for you !! and medical people that don't know you ..its madness ..its like me saying to you ..you are fit to work .even when i carnt see you and don't know you..

  • X( i missed the programme, my friend has just been denied this benefit, she cannot walk with her left foot touching the floor, she is exhausted just walking a few feet, they cannot find anything wrong with her on MRI, i have know this lady for over 20 years, we worked tog when my children were small. she is not the person i knew who was such a hard worker, now she can't even dress herself, because she can walk, albeit in agony, she was turned down for this benefit.
    the system stinks big time,
like you said our docs know which of us are able to work and which of us who can't.
what jobs can we do ? everyday living is exhausting let alone expecting us to work as hard and fast as we used to. i would love to be able to work again, my boss has told me he will find work for me if and when i'm able to go back. who knows if and when i will ever be able to go back.
scroungers we are NOT, we are just unable to do the things we used to, lets hope whoever thought of this stupid benefit rule suffers from pain like we do, maybe then they would re-think its policy.
but they would have massive pay off from goverment and their mortgage etc would be paid off.
they will never know how we live !!!!!!
  • its a sly dirty campaign verging on abuse from the government and when its in full swing over here there will be mass objections and the government will find themselves at the end of many a human rights law suits .as i am sure that they are contravening some basic human rights issues ..i don't profess to know much about law and would appreciate any comment from any solicitors on here that may be able to shed some light on the subject .if it comes to my turn and i am refused benifit i will have no hesitation to hire a solicitar to fight my corner because i am a genuine person with genuine illnesses and can not work .i have had to turn a dream job down from my friend {he has his own company } and i could have made good money ..my point being if i carnt work for him i carnt work for anyone ..i know my limitations .i was a very hard worker in the 80/90s .and i loved my job .if i could work i would,, unlike some that just sit around on there estates taking drugs getting girls pregnant and don't want to work but get benifit for doing nothing..you know the type always got huddies on and all the latest mobile phones and the latest trainers and those horrible dogs..well that's not me ..i came from 54it but worked my way up the ladder but was knocked off in my best years and lost 20 years of hard work and had to learn to live within a budget and now have to watch every penny .thank god kath earns good money otherwise we would be ...well...{sounds like} ...ducked!

  • i will be facing this benefit claim before you, i will let you know how it goes, it won't be for a few months as i am getting sick pay from work still but when that stops i will have to claim it, as i understand it i will get it automically for 13 weeks then they send you for a medical, correct me if i'm wrong on this.
i'm hoping i don't get the same b---h who saw my friend, she was asked if she could pick something up from the floor if she dropped it ? her reply was yes if she had a chair to help lower herself and use it for support to get up again, failed NO benefit entitlement.
not sure it's good for me but i can't get back up from the floor on my own, wouldn't even try now it causes too much pain, if i drop something it stays there until someone else picks it up.
i can understand that we are able to do somethings unlike very physically and mentally disabled people, but it does not mean we are able to work, it makes my blood boil, i have lived in this country all my life and worked since leaving school, i've paid my taxes unlike a lot of people who arrive here from abroad and claim everything no questions asked.
sorry if i have offended anyone but GREAT BRITAIN is no longer GREAT ~X(
  • i carnt say what i want to say publicly but i am sure you and i are thin king the same thing as regarded to benefits .the sick are easy sift targets for the government .did you see benifit busters on CH4 the other night ? they have this private french company that our government have bought in {so much for British jobs for British workers!}they has this young lad from oldham and he had an operation on his back and was in pain he went with his mum to the place where the [medical] was performed {a 15 minute affair} and he was deemed fit to work} and kicked of benefits the las was in pain and he was taking DF118 and other drugs .i was annoyed at the system and the attitude of the staff that said they could all get jobs if they wanted to .!! i don't believe that they are as ill as they are making out ..again my blood was on boil! people that don't have pain like us will never know what we have to go through on a 24 hours .our life is hell .i am not egsadurating my life stinks at the moment i feel like i am in limbo i am waiting for an appointment to see the surgeons .and again no one seems to care meamwhilt i am sat here on my chair pounding down the drugs ..its as if my life has been put on hold again.it was bad enough when i had back ache but could still go for a swim of wash the car or do a bit of house work but now i CARNT do anything as i am knackered and in pain ..its 54i7!!
