my primary care dr (internal medicine) called and had a talk with me today. he had been on vacation and stated i was on his mind a lot while he was away. i have a really close relationship with this doctor and he has tried for the last several years to find out why i suffer from chronic pain and why my body is just falling apart. i have had extensive testing done and he has not overlooked any symptom. my test results have came back with all sorts of postives... fifths diseases, mono, human provo ( what the crap! this is stuff kids get!) and a positive ana with no known end to what is causing the positive ana. i get iron infusions yearly (used to be a triple platelet donor) and my vitamin d shoots down without warning. i have to take vitamin b shots at home weekly due to it being low. i have a very good diet. he has referred me over to other specialists that couldn't find the answers either.

he now wants to send me to UVA or Duke University to have an extensive case study completed. i first expressed concern for my job security. i was already off eariler this year due to surgery to repair a bowel obstuction now i am off due to my neck. then i told him about the cost. he said he could enter a request to have it covered by the university but i feel guilty about that but as my husband states i have paid so much out over the last 20 in medical expenses and never did ask for assistance that i should accept the help now.

has anyone had this done? did it help?

sorry for the laziness of this message but its late & i am getting tired.

  • I havnt had it done, but feel like I should. You go for it girl. No one ever steps up to help us when we have so many Dr bills from chronic illness's. You should take advantage of whatever you can. It appears to me, that you have had more than your share of problems and if anyone deserves a little special help, You Do...Take care and sorry I can only try to tell you to let people help you..Love, Robin
  • Oh, Thanks Robin!

That really touched my heart. I really want the help but I have always given and I guess I don't know how to take.

Thanks again for the very kind words. You are always so sweet & I enjoy reading your post.

I think you should give it a try if possible. It's great that your doctor would try to get you help. It's great that he actually cares. Wouldn't it be wonderful to find out what's going on and find a solution? I wish you the best of luck.

  • Teaching hospitals can come up with some very good answers. Remember it is not charity if they accept you with a "bill insurance only" type of plan. They are TEACHING, students are learning. You are simply the subject matter!
I had over $5k worth of dental work done for $2200 at a teaching dental school. I did not feel bad about that and the dentist was great! Without that plan at that time I would now be wearing dentures.

One thing to remember, it can get tiring at times as they will likely parade your symptoms past at least a few different people! I have always been told in advance and been able to say no, if I did not want to go through yet another student exam.
  • I agree, i think you owe it to yourself to accept the help, my goodness you have suffered enough, you deserve help and support, it has made me think that there are actually some doctors around that do care and try and understand..............
  • Never turn down a helping hand, because you never now if you'll get another one!!! Good luck!!!
APROUD CANADIANveteranButNOTa doctor, my thoughts are my own
  • Oh my goodness YES...take the offer!! I would in a heart beat!!
You go for it girl and do not feel one bit guilty.

My pain Doctor wanted me to go to the Cleveland Clinic for a pain pump implant and I would in a heart beat except I can't afford it.

Best of luck to you and hope you find the answers you need...
    Sending a hug >:D<

  • I would had I ever been given that chance. Anything is worth it if it can improve your life in any way. Besides if you can overcome Ovarian Cancer,,, this should be a piece of cake.

It is a struggle for many of us to even find good doctors, take this chance and run with it.

Good luck and let us know what goes on
  • Yes go for it! One thing my mom always taught me, give give give and it will always come back to you. Like I never have yard sales, I always donate to others and to church thrift store. So this is you receiving back fir all you have given others.
    God works that way!
Good luck to you and I hope you find answers! And as said above,if you can survive cancer you can do this!
Hope you have a good day!
  • I have thought hard about this. Problem is I will have to remain on disability and I will lose my job placement. I don't know if I want to take that type of hit in pay right now.

I know shut up and just do it. I can always find something else once they find the problem. I just hope if I give up my job they find the problem. I love the position I am in and this will put me over and my boss is the type to displace someone in a minute!

Everyone have a great one and I will let you know what I decide and when they do it.
  • Just my humble opnion, but you don't want to be kicking yourself in your rear end, if you health declines to the point where you'd lose your job anyway. This offer from your doctor is TRULY a gift!

As mama Joyce (my mother) always told me, if you got your health you got everything! And, of course, 54 years later, I realize she's right -- darn it!

Take care Wandtmac and take good care of yourself for a change -- it's your turn!
