Ultrasound versus Fluroscopy guided procedures

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone here has a PM doc that does ultrasound guided injections instead of always using a fluoroscope? Is that even a viable option with injections? I got curious because I got a copy of some clinical notes from one of my PM docs, and in it his recommendation was "possible ultrasound guided injection at next appointment." The doc is out of state so I don't see him anymore, but have never been to another PM guy that even mentioned the possibility of avoiding the fluoroscope and doing things with ultrasound.

I mainly ask because I'm a female of childbearing age, and I feel like I'm glowing in the dark from all the radiation I've had. Do most PM guys know how to do ultrasound guided injections and they just prefer the fluoroscope, or do only particular ones do it? Has anyone here ever had ultrasound guided injections? I feel a little betrayed because if that really is an option with injections I would definitely elect for ultrasound over the fluoroscope any day...

  • I had 2 needle aspirations done by ultrasound guidance as well as a PICC line inserted in this manner. All of the above were performed by a radiologist. He froze each of the above mentioned areas and there was virtually no pain.

Not sure what the pros and cons are with regards to ultrasound versus fluroscopy....
