ESI didn't work, worse

So I had my first ever ESI about a week and a half ago, L5/S1 for sciatica. Going in, I was mostly numb in my lower leg and foot, with some patches of pain but the main problem is extreme weakness. Didn't see any relief after the first few days, and now, 10 days later, pain has increased all over, not just weakness and numbness. The pain has gotten worse, simply put. Is this just dumb bad luck or can an ESI have negative effects?
