greetings. i am in a terrible bind. i am a very active 18 year old soccer player and was on my way to a d1 universtiy untill i "threw" out my back deadlifting my PR 285. i came up sideways to the right on my last rep. any way i have terrible terrible back pain and textbook symptoms of a herinated l5 disk with siatica. i have done a cortozone injection in nerve root of the s1 nerve with proceded to make my leg numbness 10x's worse and weakness worse. i drag my toes every couple steps.. any way its been 4 months and i have done every test known to see whats wrong and it show that my disks are indeed not pertruding into my spinal ruling that out and idk what else to do i am gettin worse daily and am refused treatment beacuse my tests dont show a herniation of any kind. Can anyone relate or tell me what to do? i am too youg to be thrown into pain management.. HELP. Thanks you guys!

  • Have you had a discogram to see if you have a tear in the disc?

  • If you are having trouble being treated by a fellowship-trained spinal specialist, I would suggest you go to a pediatric orthopedic spinal specialist or even a pediatric orthopedic sports medicine specialist.

I realize you are 18 and feel to old to go to a "pediatric" doctor of any type, but I know a number of young athletes, 18-22, who had to do just this in order to have their concerns taken seriously.

First, you will probably have to be near a large city or a large university teaching hospital to find a pediatric orthopedic spinal specialist or sports medicine doc. These people are used to dealing with kids who have major problems and health issues. They would take your issues seriously, would know how to deal with still-growing bones, muscles, etc. and how to deal with your pain.

I am only suggesting this if you feel you have exhausted the possibilities with a neurosurgeon or orthopedic spine surgeon. I am not clear from your post who you've seen, what tests have been done, etc.

I know we often have younger people on the forum who have trouble having their pain complaints taken seriously. If that is the case, I suggest the pediatric ortho.

Sometimes you just have to keep trying different specialists until you hit on one that can help you. It is a matter of trial and error. It can get expensive and can be very frustrating.

Are you currently resting your back to see if that helps any?

If you can explain your situation a bit more, perhaps others will have some suggestions for you.
  • thanks for the reply.. i live in houston so i mean i have seen a 2spine specialist, 2 neurosurgeons, 2 neurologists, pain management, 2 othropedic spine specialists lol i have been around the bend. i am currently seeing a pediatric spine specialts who will condcut a bone scan, but idk what to expect. the tests i have done are a meylogram, xrays, ct scan, mris, emg, ect basically everything. but each test the doctors specifially said that they were going to line up my spine to ensure a good picture so i am wondering if that contributed to a negative readin for any herniations in all my studies? idk all i know is this pain is f***** extreme!!!
  • Can you feel where the pain is? I normally get a all over the place pain, which is my normal pain. It starts to descrease after a bit and then gives me clues as to what is injured. Facet joint, SI, Inside the guts. Up the back, sides, left or right or both. This picks off the certain single muscles that are hurt.

Now - reasearch - shows that some of them atrophy in 24 hours and the nerves stop using them, for up to 5 years.

The is a certain set of Physcal Therapy that focuses only on the inner most muscles. These are the small core muslcles, not the ones we see in 6 paks, but the little inner ones. They can be re-habilitated in 5 to 10 weeks.

This is really about learning about you body and how it reacts to things. It is a challenging journey, to feel each muscle fire, each time and know that it is working correctly. Because not paying attnetion, caused me to injure myself and have to take 3 months to rehab this back to where I am today. So -yes - I live it too! I cannot lift anything more than 20lbs or so. Cheers - C45
  • yes my pain is in one spot in the lowest part of my back on my L5 vertebra. i have no nerve pain.. i dont have reflexes on my left leg. if i move in certain positions i can feel like somthign is out of place down there idk what but i just feel a pinch/stab. the weakness is the only thing concerning me at the moment after 5 months of being called "chronic"? seems more serious.. i'm just waiting untill i loose my extratory control and crap everywhere and then maybe attention will be given :/
