Blunt Question- Need help

I am having trouble urinating. If I was a man (I'm not :D ) I'd say it was prostate trouble. I can feel my bladder is full, but I can't start the flow normally. I have to exert pressure to start the stream. Then, even when I know it's flowing, I can't feel anything at all. If I quit with the straining, the urine stops. Can this be from my L4-5 bulging disc and spinal stenosis? I know lower back issues can cause incontinence, but I've never read that they can cause trouble going. I never feel like my bladder is empty.

Anybody out there have any ideas, or have the same thing? Hope I didn't offend anyone by asking. (|:

  • Hi Maggie, to be honest Maggie, I really dont know...I dont have a clue, but i sympathise with you, I just didnt wanna not reply after reading, I thint with the spine anythings possible.....hopefully someone will drop in who might know more.but in meantime I would mention it to doctor.
  • What you're having is called urinary retention, and, yes it can be a result of your spinal problems. My advice is to call your doctor today.

    Best wishes to you,

  • Hello- I am a guy and yes we have trouble like that to. L3-L4-L5 -Stenosis. I find that the troulbe is an inability to let the muscle go, that controls the valve.

And when that happens - I must call my Dr. I have had it happen a couple times and then leave as a issue, but my Dr needs to know!

Your does too! Call him/her today! C45
  • i have the same problem .my doctor told me it was from the damage to the spine .its not very nice is it! have you seen your doctor?
  • I agree, talk to your dr.
I know woman that have had children (not all) can sometimes have there bladders tilt, that can cause this to happen. I dk if you have had kids. But, I've had this problem at times. I'll pm u and let you know what I have to do.
But yes talk to dr. About it.
  • hi!!! :H you could just have a bad kidney infection so please call your doctor and see what is going on. it could be that simple or somthing more complicated as has been mentioned. good luck and get going on that phone!!! :-C ,make your appointment and talk to a doctor! Jenny :)
  • No need to apologize for this question.

As others have said, it's possible that it could be from your spine issues. But I wanted to tell you that I had that problem years ago, long before my spine problems began, and it turned out to be a urethra infection.

Whatever it is, I'll echo the other posters: you need to call your doctor.

Take care and let us know what's going on.
  • I am posting a link to information about cauda equina syndrome, NOT because I think this is causing your problem, but because any of us who have lower lumbar spinal problems need to be aware of it and of the potential for permanent nerve damage IF it is not diagnosed and dealt with. One symptom is either retention of urine or bowel, or incontinence of urine or bowel.

Please read so you are familiar with the symptoms and the hows and whys CES occurs:

Call your doctor and don't let him just pass it off as nothing. Find out for sure!!

    xx Gwennie
  • Gwennie, I read the link about cauda equina. I found it very informative, and I do have several of the sx's. I am seeing my PCP on Wednesday and will discuss this with him. He will probably recommend my seeing my neuro-surgeon. Oh joy. I don't think it's any type of an infection, as I don't feel any sicker than normal :D And I'm not running a temp or any sx's like that. Will post what my PCP says. Thank you all so much for the replies.

  • How was your appointment? Did the doc know anything about CES?
  • My PCP didn't think it was cauda equina syndrome. Thanks for the link, it was very informative. On Sept 9 I fell in the dark on my tile floor, tripping over my pet gate, 14" high. Half asleep and forgot it was there :/ I fell very hard on my right hip. IThe next day I couldn't lift my rt leg up to step up on the curb first, had to step with leg, then drag leg up. ER X-rayed and said no fracture, that's all they told me. My PCP reviewed the radiology report with me. I had degeneration, big surprise, LOL, and a malalignment of the pubic symphysis. He is an osteopath, but did not want to try to adjust the pelvis, as I still have a lot of pain. He is sending me for X-rays at a different facility of both hips and the pelvic area. I don't trust the hospital where I went to the ER, but had no choice, only one in town. So before my PCP goes any further with either a referral to orthopedic specialist or adjusts it himself, he wants to see more and better X-rays. After that he gave me a shot of cortisone in my elbow. It sure made a difference :D The pain I've had there over 2 months is gone!

Thank you for asking. I won't have the x-rays until next week, will post what they say. I always make sure I get a copy of the report.
