Hi everyone! I am a 28 yo F, registered nurse who works in recovery room and anaesthetics. I live in Melbourne, Australia.
In 2002 (aged 21) I had a micro discectomy following 2 years of living with the pain of a l4/5 disc prolapse that was impinging on the nerves. I was in hospital for 6 days after the surgery and off work for 6 weeks. Surgery was a great success!
About 2 years ago (5 yrs post surgery) I turned to do something and got severe back and leg pain. MRI showed a disk bulge again at l4/5 and an annular tear.
I had several epidural cortisone blocks following this, which were successful.
Roll on to this year (Feb) and I stared getting severe pain and pins and needles in my right leg and foot. I had another epidural cortisone which did nothing.
It has progressively got worse and my right leg is contantly achy, throbbing and my foot is fuzzy. The pain seems to radiate down into my calf and under my foot. No pain meds help, so I don't take any. I am standing for 10-12 hrs a day in my job, which makes it unbearable by the end of a long shift. I am unable to sleep some nights due to the constant pain.
I finally went and saw my neurosurgeon last week, and I am now waiting on another MRI (in 3 weeks) and then I see him again on Nov 9th. I am wondering what the MRI will show, if 2 years ago there was a bulge? I assume due to the pain that it has got worse.
The neurosurgeon believes that I will need surgery again, which I am not against, as I just want to get on with life without this pain!!
I am off to the USA for a holiday in 4 weeks (going to walt disney world) and I am DREADING the flight over there (20 hrs!)
I am just coming on here for some support, as no one seems to 'get' what I am feeling, so I don't discuss it with anyone really:)
Hoping this forum will help me:)
