Disc Herniation with Sciatica in pain for about 8 months now, Steroid injection over a week ago

I am new to this forum. I hope everyone reading this has a good day pain wise. I am a 21f with herniated L4 and L5 and sciatica going down my left leg. I had a similar condition two years ago except the pain was going down my right side. I had two injections done over a week ago and I am still in quite a bit of pain. The shots helped a little bit, but nothing to be excited over. Right now I am trying to figure out what to do next. It is my last semester in college and it is such a horrible experience to go through during what is supposed to be a fun time in my life. I can't wear heels, go dance, and end up not going to many parties. Surgery is not an option until I at least finish my degree. Also I am on tramadol 50mg 4 times a day, and lately it has been making me moody, or maybe it is just the pain. Can anyone suggest any other good pain meds that won't make me loopy?

You dont just need pain medications to help deal with your situation. Since you are new and we really dont have a lot of information about your situation, we can only guess.
Since you have had left and right leg sciatica, that would indicate that different sides of the L4/L5 disc are being impacted.
With the doctor that did the MRI for you, what was their suggestion as to an action plan?
At your age, I know that most specialist will want to try the conservative route first. There are so many treatments that you can try to see which one gives you the best benefit
Many patients can react positively to these treatments so that they do not need the pain medications. As long as you are going to school, almost any narcotic pain medication is going to have an impact on your thought process.
When my daughter was a Freshman in College, she had both knees operated on. Standard procedure was giving her pain medications. After the first day at class on those meds, she just told me, No Way, I will deal with the pain, I can't concentrate in class. Instead she used Ice/Heat and Magnet therapy to get her through the day.
Talk things over with your doctor, perhaps sessions
    -Physical and/or Aqua Therapy
    -Massage Therapy
    -Ice/Heat Therapy
    -and more

  • Hi, thank you for your response. Sorry I did not clarify. I tried all the conservative therapies aside from acupuncture and they only seemed to make my situation worse. Especially physical therapy, which caused dystrophy in my muscles which I still have. I always look like I am bending over to the side a bit. I have a doctors appointment next week and in the meantime I have been using ice therapy which helps until I "thaw". My doctor said we will continue with the series of shots and then talk about more invasive procedures. I am just feeling disappointed that my first shot has not seemed to give me much relief.
