Hi All:

Is it possible that surgery could spark athritis in the joints about the surgical site? I have ACDF in early March '09, and started having neck pain again this week. Went for another C-Spine MRI and was told in the report that I now have athritis "above the surgery".

Thoughts?

Howdy and welcome to the site!! :-) I don't know if your ACDF could specifically "cause" arthritis, but you can get what is called "Adjacent level disk disease".. basically the stress levels change on the disks above and below the fusion, this can cause all manner of changes. Myself, I had that happen this year. I was fused at C5/6, and then later my C6/7 went with hernia and degeneration. Both of my surgeries involved taking part of the vertebrae out because of inflammation(arthritis?) What is your doctor telling you? Hopefully you will have answers soon. Take care, keep us posted!!! :-)
