My surgeon just called and cancelled my two level ACDF. My bones aren't strong enough to handle the hardware. He's going to send me to a rhuematologist and build up my bones.

  • Sounds like you have osteoporosis? There are medications they can have you to try to help your body build stronger bones. Do you take calcium and Vitamin D supplements?

    Wish you the best.

  • I take calcium and Vit. D, but he's afraid the hardware won't hold, so is sending me to a specialist, to build up my bones before the surgery. Maybe Fosamax or something?

    Hi sissyjane,
How does your surgeon expect your rheumy to build up your bones? Could it be that he meant he wanted you to build muscle to support your bones?
I am sure this is somewhat of a letdown to you as you probably were
emotionally focused on getting this surgery behind you.
I hope all works out for you and you receive the care and relief you deserve.

  • That has to be so disappointing to be ready for the surgery and then have it cancelled. I hope whatever they have planned for you to improve the situation works and works quickly so you can be on your way to hopefully getting some pain relief.

I take both, but obviously aren't working. I'm miserable, and waiting for the surgeon to call me back.
