Hello everyone,

I am very glad that I stumbled upon this forum. I have been reading many posts and they are helping me with some of the second guessing and nervousness that I am experiencing about my upcoming surgery. I am having a TLIF at L5-S1 on January 11th. I have spondylolisthesis at L5-S1. I have not been suffering as long as some others that I have read about, but know that my symptoms have gotten quite a bit worse just in the last few months.

I would enjoy any suggestions or thoughts from anyone who has udergone this type of surgery.

Thank you very much!

  • Hi & welcome to the board! January 11 is a familiar date to me--2 years ago I had a PLIF on January 11 (2008) b/c of spondy @ L4/5. Spondy symptoms can worsen quickly, as you mention, going from not so bad to very bad in just months, even weeks, as you say. You are, no doubt, quite miserable at the moment.

Second guessing & nervousness are totally normal. In fact if you didn't feel those things, you would be in the minority! You may want some assistance from Valium, etc or just try to focus on the success your surgery will be, how much better you may feel & how the spondy will be corrected. I was a wreck until the day b4, then very calm & totally calm going in. (But the Valium really helped, + it helped w/ the muscle spasms the spondy was causing.) You may want to ask your doc about it if you start to get too stressed. You don't want to go into surgery stressed out, you want to be nice & relaxed.

What grade do you have? Mine was a 23% slip (almost a grade 2) and the difference afterwards was so much better in that area, anyway. Now after 2 years, my L4/5 feels really strong & it will never "slide" again :)Hopefully you will have the same successful result.

I'm sure others will be along to welcome you..glad you're here. This is a wonderful community & a great support system thru-out your whole fusion experience.

  • I have not had this surgery but I do know how scary back surgery can be.
