Muscle Cramps in neck and upper arms

Anyone experience neck muscle cramps and upper arms when they lay down at night? I had a corpectomy two years ago in October. Recently I have started a new job and have been shopping for xmas but that would not typically create issues. It is keeping me from sleep and the symptoms came on just this week. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated!

  • It may be stress. I have a herniated disk but I know when I get stressed the pain increases. I would try a muscle relaxant if you have any. Or my favorite a shot of Nyquil at bedtime to get you through Christmas. If you still have the problem next week go see a doctor.
  • Lad,

I have the sleep problems on a daily basis. What levels was your previous surgery?

I agree with Kris- follow up with your doctor. Are you using anything OTC?

  • Thanks for your reposonse! My surgery was for c5/6. Results werent perfect but I have been pretty satisifed. I have noticed more left hand tingling and some other minor issues this year. This cramping came out of the blue. When I sit up the muscle cramp will go away. Briefly I also had muscle tightening in my diaphragm area last night. Very weird. I am not able to get into the doc until after holidays. Aspirin, tylenol does not seem to help. I cannot take ibuprofen.
  • Welcome to Spine-Health.

Have you tried heat or ice for the spasms? I agree that you really need to see your doctor and make sure that the adjacent discs to your original op levels aren't causing new problems.

I certainly hope not, but it happens.

If your pain and/or spasms really get bad, don't hesitate to go to urgent care or the ER. They might be willing to give you some muscle relaxants and perhaps some pain meds to last you until you can get to your doctor appointment.

Good luck to you and please keep us posted.

  • Cath - I have not tried heat or cold. Thanks for the advise. I will keep you posted.
  • Well last night I took a hot shower before bed - aspirin and use my soft collar - no spasms and I slept all night! Merry Christmas to me!!
