I have suffered from DDD since I was 18 but could handle that pain. I now have 2 herniated discs (L4-L5 and L5-S1). Tried the steriod injections and didnt see alot of relief. My Neurosurgeon wants to do a Microdiscetomy and says it only takes a week to recover. But after reading posts on here I am freaking out. I am very active (run, bike, etc.) I would rather live in pain then live like a old woman...HELP!

  • Welcome to Spine-Health. I'm so sorry that you're having problems and you seem too young for what's going on.

I have never had a microdiscectomy, but I had a friend (she's in her 50s) that had one not too long ago and she came out of the surgery with almost all of her symptoms gone and her recovery was very quick. She was up and at 'em within a week, but chose to take it careful for about a month total.

With your young age, I would think you'd heal rather quickly and that you could get back to normal quickly also.

It's easy to get freaked out when looking through these forums, but keep in mind that many, if not most, members who've had successful treatment or surgeries move on living their life and no longer post here. This is a great place for support and those members no longer need what we provide here.

Hang in there and be sure you're confident in your choice whether to have surgery and that's the road you choose, that you're confident in your surgeon.

  • You make a really good point about ppl who are doing well not being on here b/c they are getting on with their lives. I think I will have to go through with surgery b/c I am noticing new pain and symptoms daily. I was on the treadmill last night and couldn’t bend my left foot upward to run. I was able to get on the elliptical but paid for it when I got home. My appointment is on the 5th so hopefully I can get a surgery date not too long after that. Thanks again
