Foot Pain

Last night I started having severe pain on the top of my foot and some pain radiating down the leg but the foot pain is the worse. I am afraid I have another herniated disc, anyone else have pain mostly in the top of their foot? I had pain mostly in my leg when I had surgery 2 years ago in L5/S1.

  • Are you familiar with a "dermatome map?" If not, run a search and you will see a diagram that shows the approximate areas of pain and the corresponding spinal nerves that innervate each area. Depending on what part of the foot it is, this could be referring from L4, L5 or S1 if it is the very outside of foot and little toe.
  • Gwennie...thanks for this map.
I never heard of it but have seen it in dr's offices.
It makes sense why I have some feeling in my buttocks and not others.
  • Yes, I've had foot pain in the last week or so, a matter of fact. Have been having intermittent pain at night in my shinbone but the other night it radiated down onto the top of my foot and into my toes and was quite severe. Two T#3 didn't help so I dug out my oxy and 10 mg of that finally let me go to sleep 2 hours later. If it recurs very often, I'll be making another appointment with my spine specialist. I described it to the ortho I saw a couple of days ago about my knee and he said it wasn't coming from my knee and that it sounded like neurogenic pain from my back. You foot pain put together with your other symptoms, sounds like you have an issue with your back.
