Broken ribs everyday, Anyone??Newbie

Hi Everyone,
I am new here after a friend sent me a link to this forum.
I am very sorry for everyones troubles but i am also so glad i am not alone. I could not find a great deal of information related to the Thoracic area of the spine.

So essentially from about midnight-1am until i crack it (generally 4-5am) my whole rib cage is broken. I have gone 10 rounds with Mike Tyson and not come out on top. Intense stabbing pain between the shoulder blades that doesn't let up for a while. On the worst mornings i cant breath. I can't move, the whole truck of my body spasm's. I get my BF to heat a wheat pack for me, and put it on my back for at least 15mins before i can bear to crawl out of bed.

Most days it will relieve as the day go's on and my body wamrs up, unless i sit or lie down for too long then it comes back.

This has been ongoing for near 2 years. I put up with it for 18months before seeing someone about it, because it was only at night i could deal with it. But now it is during the day and i have now lost my job because i physically could not do it anymore. My last day working, the following 2 days i had numbness and tingling in one hand, as well as immense back pain

Report from Xray/CT scan shows that i am bent to the right (knew that), mild disc space narrowing through the mid to uppeer Thoracic region and mild degenerative disease.

I also have arthritis between my last Lumber disk and tail bone (the name escapes me) Which plays havoc with my Sciatica.

And i also have severe whiplash of the next, it is tilted, straitened out and slightly concave in the opposite direction. But that does not annoy me to much.

I'm sorry this is becoming a very long read, i am just so relieved to find somewhere to talk about it and people not say, Thoracic back? No body hurts that, it must be something else. One doctor said i had reflux and gave me meds. I called him a not very lady like name and left.

Oh, the 3 T vert's that are out of whack are the result of my horse having a bucking fit, me flying through the air and landing on my upper back fair and square on a gutter. It just took 3 years for it to show itself. Always suffered numbness and tingling at the site but didn't think anything of it. Never scanned before now.

So i am waiting for a specialist to call me back with an appointment and go from there.
And pray i can find some work ASAP right now because i have a house to pay for. A job with no leaning over a bench, no sitting and no lifting? Do they exist? lol

Again, Sorry so long winded but i hope to become involved in this forum if i can.
Even if i am from 'down under' Australia, Our backs are all universal i believe.

Oh and i'm 23 too so the above really gets me down at times, again why i am so glad to of found this place.

Ok i'm typed out not. Need to find some relief, i am been sitting too long...lol

Thanks Guys

  • You found a great place. Thoracic is very rare and hard to find info on. But never give up looking for answers. That is the key to feeling better.

Sounds like your body is stiffening up as you sleep. How do you feel when you are active? Did you have some kind of accident other than the horse? Alot of your issues sound like the result of a car accident or similar impact injury. I ask because if it is work related you might be entitled to workers comp or if it is from a car accident there might be other insurance.

What type of docs have you gone to so far and what tests have they done? Also what specialist are you going to next? Be prepared that the road of doctors is long and filled with potholes. The key is to never give up.
  • No car accident - the whiplash was also another horse injury. I came off a horse at a gallop and headbutted the fence post fair and square - no helmet (young and stupid). Had a concussion for a week, headache, throwing up, couldn't stay awake.
But yet hospital never checked my neck, even though i told them. ( i do wonder about them sometimes) And sent me home the same day. I fractured my knee cap also. This was approx 8 years ago.
According to the xrays (at a later date) a millimeter or two more and we could of been in trouble.

Regarding work, it has brought out the injury i believe, but not caused it. I just needed to be doing the right(wrong) thing for everything to go wrong perhaps.
Even still i could claim work cover for worsening a previously known injury but that is a very long fight and one that stays to your name for your working life. Don't want to go there if i can help it.

I am going to a spinal clinic which is a group of spec and machines depending what is wrong with you.
I'm not a neurosurgeon case as yet. Thats a positive in this maybe? lol
  • you know mike Tyson's all done. next round with him and youll beat him up!
i am glad you are seeing a specialist. cant believe you waited so long to get to a dr, 18 mos!
anyway you probably know theres many joints connecting the ribs to the spine and sternum. hopefully the specialist will determine where the problem lays. maybe you need some heavy pt. or maybe its some shots in the right place. you got to loosen up the rib cage and get things smooth again.
let us know what specialist says and we will be in your corner!!!

  • Some mornings i recon i could flatten Mike i am in that bad of a mood from being so sore...lol
Yeah i put up with it for ages. Should of done something earlier but, just waiting for appointment with spec now and see what happens.

Hard also because i can't MRI it but i'm sure they can work around it.
  • what time is it down there?
    are you loosened up yet?
    takes me four hours.

  • It's 5pm here now.
Some days i can loosen in half hour - hour, bad days it just doesn't. And everything in between. I just can't pick it.
But hard to take drugs to relieve it when i want to drive.
  • ever try some swimming?
  • Yes. Feels good doing it but same story that night/next morning.
I go jogging which doesn't upset it or help it, as long as i keep good posture but i don't think it does a great deal to help build core muscle.
  • and Welcome to Spine Health.
You will find lot's of lovely people who know what you are going through and will support you in the journey you are about to go through.
