I am really thinking about going to the ER but not really sure they'd do anything for me. Am in intense pain in back low to upper & legs too but worst of all first a finger went numb & now all fingers both hands are numb. Never happened before, been playing with kids & think I worsened my back. Only have ibuproferen for pain. Have any of you gone to ER for pain flares or new symptoms? Did they help or just send you on thru? Thaks for any input!!

  • I did go to the ER once for shoulder/neck pain with radiating pain and numbness going down my left arm. They gave me a shot of Tramadol....and sent me home with Vicodin and Flexeril, and told me to follow up with my regular dr. i would think if your hands are going numb, and you haven't had that before...then maybe you should go? Just my opinion....Best wishes to you...hope your pain goes away...one way or another.
  • My regular doctor's office is an urgent care that is open until 7 pm (including weekends) and takes walk-ins. Is there anything like that around you? Emergency rooms are so awful :(
  • urgent cAre would be great, but not near me, I'm in the boonies. Hospital is 25 minute drive, and yes, ER's are awful! I always feel like no right to go to ER unless badly bleeding, life threatening etc & they'd just laugh & tell me to turn around & get on outta there. So, is good to know at least some places consider awful pain from existing problem "worthy" of a visit. Thank you!

Now I am feeling too bad to go, if that makes sense. The drive, who's going to stay with the kids, go w/me in case the ER actually helps me...overwhelming. can feel hands but now my face has gone all hot, bad stomach cramps and I am nodding off typing this...was trying to read a book to my daughter & couldn't get the words right..what the heck. Think I'll hobble my broken self to the dr's office tomorrow, see if they blow me off when see me in person! Don't think he gets how badly & suddenly worse my back's gotten. So frustrating...fight with self to "prove" is legit & "ok" to ask (BEG) for treatment then start fight over again w/docs...How did this become my life? What did I do to deserve to suffer like this day in & out? Breaks my heart that instead of enjoying every moment & day with my daughter I wish & will the clock ahead to just get the darn day over with already so I can sleep & not hurt at least for a bit. Sorry to vent...am feeling so helpless & hopeless, life hurts this bad at 31 how am I gonna make it to 41 let alone WANT decades more if life hurts this bad already. Ok I am spreading my darn black cloud & I try so hard not to do that & ruin other people's moods so I am sorry & think I need a cigarette & an attitude adjustment. Thanks again, I do appreciaqe it.
  • I went to the ER when I herniated L5-S1 (lumbar). I fought it for 10 hours but I tried 3 times to get out of bed and couldn't. I had 3 various prescription meds called in by my PCP to help me but they didn't work. Gave up and had to call ambulance to take me b/c I couldn't move.

They took the MRI, gave me some serious IV meds to 'mask' the pain so I could walk and then sent me to a specialist.

If you can wait, I would call a cervical orthopedic spine or neurosurgeon specialist. If they can't get you in right away, call your PCP and explain the issue.

In my mind, if you lose feeling or strength, it's something your PCP should be concerned about and be able to help you get an urgent appointment or at least "order" an MRI.

    Good luck.
  • The part about not being able to get your words out - that is scary stuff ! I would have yourself looked at ASAP. Please keep us updated :)
L1 - S2 "gone" useless in 1 way or another. DDD. RA. Bone Spurs. Tons of nerve damage/issues. Stenosis. Both knees replaced. 50 yrs old. I had a great fall (hence my user name) at age 41 and it has been a domino effect every since.
  • should never be ignored and is something to get checked out ASAP!
Please see someone, it may be nothing, but not everything is spine related and we can have other stuff happen that isn't to do with the spine.
  • I'm just concerned. I'm wondering, actually hoping you were able to get to the doctors today.

    Do keep us posted.

Sometimes you just have to go to your doctor and say, "Look this is not working you have to do something NOW PLEASE."

    Keep us posted.

  • Difficulty finding your words, assuming you didn't do something like take double your meds (or start on a new one- lyrica et al have that as a side effect, as well as numbness), is something to go in to be seen for right away!

My dad had that last year, sudden onset. Turns out it was viral encephalitis! He is fine now, but he was in the hospital for almost 2 months!

It's a sign that all is not right with your brain. Check back in as soon as you can please, we worry.
  • Hey, everyone. Thanks so much for being concerned, all the helpful advice & support...it really means a lot. The "weird" new symptoms were gone this morning, well except the hand numbness comes & goes. I have been in major pain this week, since the exam by the ortho, he pressed a spot in my back & it hasn't been right since, I think it's pinching nerves or something? Anyway, it hurts like crazy. I think my body was just plain old giving up last night, hit the limit and was fighting to make me go to sleep. However, when as sole caregiver for a 5 year old often I come last, I can't do what's best for me the way I'd like. I think I could sleep for a week straight, if by some miracle I could!

I did talk to my doctor, about the unmanageable pain level, being so tired, numbness & my brain not working right. I do see a neurologist so he's not that worried, leaning toward the power of pain & a body's limit. BUT all he'd rx was flexeril which I can't freakin take because I have hard enough time staying awake for my daughter as it is. Waiting waiting waiting for the spinal ortho to send my doc his notes, so I can be set up for injections & then PT. While I understand my doc's concerns about rx pain killers about now I couldn't care less, I just want to be given the chance to try them short term pre-injections & see if they help. I don't get why/how it's considered better treatment to make a person suffer to this point of pain than to rx pain killers for a couple weeks. Ugh, ranting sorry...I need to get in the shower, get some hot water flowing & wash away my pain/anger/grumpiness! Again, thank you all so much! I hope you are having a good (as it gets!) day!
