Lost Use of My Arm for 10 mins

edited 06/11/2012 - 8:43 AM in Neck Pain: Cervical
I had a posterior/anterior repair fusion - I had c4/7 hardware taken out and they put more in on c7 front/back and I have all my presurgical pain back. I have lost 20 pounds because I feel like I have a chicken bone stuck in my throat and eat only mushy type food. I started PT after I got out of a Miami J Collar after 15 weeks and finally got those muscles fairly back but the most scary thing is I lost use of my arm in the middle of the night and I thought I was dreaming but got up and woke my husband and for 10 mins I felt like it fell out of the socket. I want to hear from anyone who has loss use of a limb after or before spine surgery. I am freaked it will happen again. I was not laying on it as I sleep straight on my back and always have. I woke up with a feeling of danger and it took me a few seconds to figure out why. Of course my surgeon is running a tons of tests. Stay tuned!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • If it went away on it's own it is most likely positional. Either you rolled or twisted in your sleep or maybe your husband was pushing against you. I know mine agrivated the crap out of me after my surgeries by pushing against me in his sleep. I guess we sleep like that normally but believe me I was wide awake when it happened. Wanted to smack him but it wouldn't do any good.

I'm glad your doc is running test just to be sure. It's always possible that your hardware moved a little bit but I think you would have had this happen again it that was the case.

Let us know what they find out.
  • I still believe with all my heart that a lot of this new pain is strictly coming from my shoulder. The night I could not move my arm I felt the worse pain in my shoulder inside deep, felt like my arm was a broom stick turn inside there. My surgeon won't go after shoulder though. I am thinking of going to a shoulder specialist myself because my shoulder is rotated 2 inches forward and my scapula is locked and thats what my massause(Sp) and PT work on a lot. What symptoms are rotator cuff issues? Did you have pain go down the arm?
  • I had arthroscopic surgery for my shoulder. my shoulder was subluxated in the socket and at first I had cortisone injections to see if that would help. I wasn't able to lift my arm up past my shoulder to brush my hair without my arm getting weak and fell. I know if the nerves were compressed for a long time before surgery they could be waking up something fierce. That's good your Surgeon is ordering tests to make sure the shoulder is alright. I hope he finds out what's going on for you. My best. Charry
