  • Make an appointment with a Orthopedic or Neuro Surgeon that specializes in the spine, preferably one that is Fellowship trained.

    That's where I would start.

  • HI Debbie,

First let me say welcome to spine-health. Have a look around and you will find some great information here dealing with the issues you are having. What types have test have they performed so far. I would make a phone call back to the doctor whom ordered the chiro and let them know how you feel following that procedure. As always don't ever hesitate to get more than one opinion. Dave has a good idea about usinga fellowship trained spine surgeon. Anyway just thought I would stop by and welcome you to spine-health.
  • hi debbie

i so agree w/dave..with seeing those type of docs.
i got worse going to chiro..she got carried away with her treatment..

  • Debi,

I had a car accident over 2 years ago and am still dealing with it. It will be a hard and slow process but don't give up on your health. I agree you need to see a spine specialist and soon. I would not do the chiropractor until you do see someone who specializes in spines because as I have found out through all of this they can do more damage then good. It sounds like you have had MRIs so what levels are herniated/bulging? What is your current doctor suggestioning for your next step? As for the pain meds I would agree with you on not wanting to be addicted. However I found thru research that if you truly are in pain and only take them for the pain you can not be classed as addict. I personally only take mine when I do not have to drive any more for the day and mostly at night time to help me sleep for awhile with less pain. There is a med called Tramadol which is slow release plus there is fast release version (Tramacet is the name in Canada). Tramadol is not suspose to be addictive you could ask for this med to try.

Best of luck and keep us posted.
  • have you had an MRI scan ? i would make enquires about getting one then you will know what damage you have done .as for pain killers ..if you are in pain ..dont suffer ..take THEM ..if you are on OTC stuff its hardly likely that you will become addicted .i would see your doctor and get this back problems sorted out because if you don't you could find that your life could take a downward course and you dont want that ..you could also try a TENS and ice and heat and rest ..but i would still seek medical advice .how bad was the car smash and were you wearing your seat belt and did you need to go to hospital?
  • i have mri's done

  • I am sorry you have had so much damage done from a mva. My personal opinion is you need to take the vicodin more often to help with the pain when you are that bad from doing anything. Do what I do and don't take it when the pain is a lower number on the pain scale. If I am a 6 or less I don't touch the pain meds. That doesn't happen very often any more but I don't know what pain you can handle before you have to take meds. I have a very high pain tolerance compared to most people (doctors have even told me that lol) so just see what you can handle. As for the heat my pt suggested ice, ice and more ice to me for the herniated discs (I have 5 in spine). Just don't use the ice more then 15 mins at a time as they suggest ok. I am just trying to give you some ideas until you see the spine specialist on the 24th.

Good luck and I hope they find some help for you.
  • I am so sorry that you are in so much pain,I was in a car accident 5 months ago,I was T-boned on the front passenger side and my car did a complete turn around and then was hit in the rear pasenger side. The other person never took there foot off the gas pedal and ran the 4 way stop. I remember at first feeling the same way as I did not want to take any pain meds at all,I started out with Vicodin and am now on Darvocet,I take them as I need them,I literally couldnt manage Daily without them now as the pain is so unbareable as to the slightest movement ,Its very hard when you dont want to take pain meds but when you are truly in pain and need some relief and have been up for days in a row they can be very helpful:) I have gone thru alot in the process so far: I have seen a chiropractor: Tried adjustments(My back does not crack only feels pain thru this)I have tried the tens(combo) and massage,I have tried accupuncture, deep tissue massage, accupressure(left me bed ridden for 2 days at a time, and for me hurts extremely)The stretching machine, I do agree with Candy that the chiropractor can do more harm then good as I am in worse pain now then when I started. I have had injections,I have done physical therapy,I have done water therapy and I still have pain:(
I have been put on Prednisone 80 Mg and tapering off for 2 weeks,Meloxicam(Anti-inflammatory)Chlorzoxazone(Muscle Relaxer)Darvocet(Pin Med)Lexopro(Anti-depressant)Adderall(Stimulant)Lorazepam(anti-anxiety meds) It can be a long process as I am starting to find this out,At this time we know I have a Bulging/Herniated Disc in L4/L5, I still have neck problems as my hands and arms go tingly and numb adn ahve the habit to drop things,My Doctor states it is a pinched nerve in my neck even though it didnt show up on the MRI, My right leg from the hip all the way to my knee hurts to touch and is always in pain,my feet go numb and it hurts to walk, stand for long periods of time, sit for long periods of time,I am able to bend and twist but the moment I do I am in constant pain, having Constant back spasms. My middle back still hurts till this day and I will be having a MRI done to see if there is any damage in that area,My doctor also said that the pain in my right leg is sciatic pain and that there is definitly something pinching and its coming from the lower back
Again I am sorry that you are going thru so much pain,I know that you dont want to take the pain meds but if it will help take the edge off until you see the Spine Specialist it may be a temporary help until then,I also dont like heat or ice,If movement hurts too much rest,as time goes on you will start to know what triggers your pain and that also helps to cope,I find laying on my left side with a bunch of pillows helps relieve some pressure off the disc.
Good Luck and I hope all goes well at the Spine Specialst.
  • I went to a surgeon he told he can do surgery by going through my chest pass my heart to get to the disc in my neck ... well that will not happen noonne is ripping open my chest so if i dont do thi s he said i have to deal with the pain unbelievable im so not doing it so i quess ill be in pain
