I was diagnosed with Degenerative Disc Disease last June, before that I would visit PT's, chriopractors get acupuncture and workout to see if anything could help my lower back pain.

In March of this year I had a anterior & posterior lunbar fusion with peek cage, rods and screws plus a discetomy. I been having some good days and some not so good days. I notice I can stand and sit for like 20 - 30 mins then I start getting numbness on my left thight just to above my knee. Most of my pain is lower back to the left over the left side of my bottom and down the thigh.
My Dr still hasn't released me to work since I drive alot for work or sit for long periods of time. I still cannot drive at all.

My Dr said the screws and everything else is correctly in place but the pain may be linked to my body getting adjusted to the materials inside of me and there could be some inflammation. My other problem is, I always had allergies but notice it has gotten worst since surgery, does anyone have an allergic reaction to the materials used in surgery? Due to my day to day allergies I was placed on prednisone again since last week. I'm so sick of taking steroids, I took them before surgery due to inflammation in my back and hip and now for allergies. I'm 43 but with all these meds and surgery I'm feeling like 83.

  • Hello sunshine

Sorry to hear of your pain. Reading what you have put,you are very early into the recovery period for lumbar fusion surgery, your body needs time to heal.I also have degenerative L5/S1, and may be contemplating a spinal fusion. I can sympathise on the feeling well over your age, i too feel like an 80 yr old and im only 29!

Other members on here who have had a fusion hopefully will be able to offer you some more specific advice.

    All the best

  • Sunshine,

We have almost identical situations. My fusion at L4/5 was in November 2009. I have been released by my surgoen off and on. I still suffer from awful pain in lower back, rt hip and buttock and rt thigh. Also numbness and tingling in rt thigh and groin. I have DDD too. And I am 43. This is the most frustrating 4 years of my life. I had high hopes the fusion would take away the pain aspect, and in some ways it just moved the pain. Not the outcome I was expecting.

I am still keeping my chin up and hoping for more recovery in the next 6 months. I am seeing a pain mgt specialist now. So far not much has changed. I wish you the best and hope you recovery quickly.
  • Thanks for your input, don't know if I mentioned it but my surgery was also on L5/S1. This week I drove even though I'm not released by my Dr to do so. I think I've over done it this week so effective last night I've been getting more numbness and dull aching pain. I wish you lots of luck and hope you don't need the spinal fusion after all.
    All the best,

  • Trasee,

Mine was L5/S1 and I feel like it really got worse the last 4-5 yrs of my life. I'm currently having numbness and a dull aching pain.

I've come to realize that all I can do is hope for at least 90% recovery, and that may be too much to ask for. At this point I feel like 60% recovery has happened but some days I feel as if I've stepped backwards. after my experience within the last few days I'm scared about sitting in traffic for 2-3 hrs and long meetings. I'm soooooo nervous at this point.....

Thank you for the well wishes and I wish you all the best too.

  • dear Marcia, i am sorry you are still having trouble after your surgery.. :( you must be so disappointed not to be completely pain free or atleast the 60% you would be happy with.. having to settle takes alot of mind adjustment in itself. i do hope things turn around and you find that 100% relief we all hope for after surgery!! Jenny :)
