What did I do to my back?! It has been almost two years now :(

Hi everyone! I have been reading through the forum and decided to join. There seems to be quite a bit of support and good advice that I want to be a part of.

During my one and only pregnancy, two years ago, I started to have lower back pain. It is usually gnawing pain and manageable without meds, however, this is only because I sleep in a recliner, on a heating pad, and do several exercised through the day to keep my back pain tolerable.

I have not slept in my bed for about a year and a half. I have tried, but in a matter of minutes I am in severe pain.

Occasionally, I have terrible flare-ups. Currently, I have a bad one and am on valium and a round of steroids. The last time I took prescription meds for my back was last August (almost a year ago)

I have flare-ups of severe pain frequently, however, they last only a few days and I can suffer through them with my usual daily regimen of ibuprofen.

This flare-up though, like last years, has me in so much pain that I can hardly walk. Nothing in particular caused it. I am at a loss as to what to do next. I have done chiropractor, PT, and had a regular x-ray (no abnormalities) The exercises from PT help me a little every day, but I never get true resolve. I am here to find the next step...

  • Okay, so after reading my post, I realized that I need to clarify my flare-ups. My most severe flare-ups like the one currently, means that I am immobile. This type of flare up is only on occasion where as I get frequent, short term, sever pain flare-ups where I can still somewhat function and I manage with OTC meds.
  • I'm sorry to hear you're having a flare up. Have you had an MRI yet? My back pain started with a flare up and couldn't walk for a week then I went back working until finally I collapsed 3 months later and couldn't work or hardly walk anymore. I think your issue should be addressed since you've been sleeping in a recliner for so long. I can't sleep next to husband anymore because my back is very fragile and he kicks in his sleep.

We're here to support you and hope your Primary GP Dr. can help you soon. Take care. Charry

  • Howdy Carrie, and a Hearty Welcome to Spine-Health! On the top of the web page you can search for many of the answers you are seeking, and in the forums you will find that while we aren't doctors, we do support all!

From your signature, you are as yet "undiagnosed". Have you seen your primary care doctor or a Neurologist for an exam or tests yet? What you've described could be any manner of things. A proper exam and diagnostic testing will answer what we can't. Sorry to hear you are hurting and going through this. I've seen others who had their backs start being mean to them during pregnancy. Hopefully it is just a fluke. Please keep us posted on how it goes. Take care, and again welcome aboard!!!

  • You mentioned regular x-ray...they really don't show much at all. An MRI would need to be done to really tell if something is going on. Do you have any pain in your legs or is it all in your back? Like Brenda asked what type of doctor are you seeing? Are you currently in a flare up? If so how long has it been?

  • Welcome to Spine-Health. You'll find a lot of great articles and videos here regarding spine issues and the members of the forum are very friendly, knowledgeable and supportive.

Like the others, I'm wondering exactly what kind of pain you're having. Is it strictly low back pain? Do you have any shooting pain into your legs? Pain in your hips? Where did they do the x-ray?

Like RWill said, x-rays don't usually show a lot and it might be time for you to get a lumbar MRI. This can be ordered through your PCP or you can find a spine specialist that will order one.

In any event, don't give up trying to find answers. It's all too common here where people get treated fo their pain but have a difficult time finding the right doctor to get to the root of the problem, kind of like putting a bandaid on a wound that needs stitches.

If I can be of any help, don't hesitate to PM me.

Please keep us posted on your progress.
