Anyone's leg ever give out and you fell? Fell again!

charryccharry Posts: 5,871
I've had weakness from getting up from a crouching position but two days ago my leg from the hip just gave out and I was on the ground. Anyone ever had leg weakness like that? I was able to get up and then had normal strength after but afraid it will happen again.

  • This probably isn't spine related but I've been getting that a few times a year for probably 10 years. If usually happens when I am on my knees and moving around. Suddenly my leg seems like it is out of the socket or my whole hip feels like it is disjointed.

It isn't really painful but does make me freak out. And in a few seconds it is fine without me really doing anything. I never really persued it since it happens so rarely and has always happened at home.
  • Yep, I've had what sounds like the same thing happen a bunch. I don't know that its relate to the knee's or not. Mine just gives out. I have fallen a few times when it happens. It usually happens on uneven ground, or stairs. I do not do stairs without a handrail or two just for this reason.

I was shown a couple of things regarding the knees at PT. The major one was not to hyper-extend the leg. The only way I can describe this would be while your standing you would try to make your leg like a pole, or lock the knee. Apparently this is not good for the knees. I pay attention to not doing this when I'm doing deep knee bends to try to strenghten my leg muscles.

My read on leg muscles is that it doesn't take a long time to get out of shape, from either protecting your back, or lack of use from your back, but boy does it take a long, long time to get them back into shape. I have been working on leg exercises for 4 months and am starting to wonder when I'm going to see the results. Seen very little so far. Walking helps but it doesn't really strenghten the legs all that much.

Be aware of the fact that you might fall at all times and be ready for it. I actually have not fallen since doing all the leg exercises.

As usual this is just my experience and I am not a doctor so use this info at your own risk.

    Good luck.

  • Charry, I just got home from hospital today.. Sunday my legs gave out and had no feeling in them either of them felt like two logs of concrete.. I was told by a family doc that it was from my lumbar which I don't even really have issues with .. but yes I couldnt lift them move them side to side or wiggle my toes nothing.. it was called temp. paralysis since they cant find out what caused mine.. my left leg first came out of it monday right leg took 2 days to come out this morning was finally able to flex my foot up and down. I am having alot of muscle pain and my joints feel like i broke all of them on the wall down on the floor.. I feel 2x in the same night within an hour.. Sat. night my right foot wouldnt flex so i could drive or push gas peddle.. friday night i lost my balance putting clothes in front loader washer and fell against our back door..and almost out the door.. I am sooo p.o. trying to find out what did this and i am stuck to using a walker until we know what happened or caused it for 100%.. would love to hear if anyone else had or has this too.. Thanks Lori..omg. I feel for you and anyone else like us.
  • When this happened all I did was walking in my kitchen to get my meds and go lay down for the evening.. Fell first time then got up only R leg first then sat for an hour decided to go to bed again and walked down hallway and both legs went out i was on wooden floors nothing to trip or slip on.
  • Charry,

I am not sure if my experience is close to what you experienced. It could be so many things. Before my fusion I was having a lot of problems with Sciatica. I would be walking around just fine and then out of the blue the leg would just totally collapse, and of course, me with it.

At the time I was working on conservative treatments and also seeing a Chiro. As soon as I reported this to my Chiro he said the gig was up. His opinion was that the nerve was impinged (is that the right word?) so it would just quit sending the signals to the muscles in the leg. He recommended I go see an Ortho .

I did go see an Ortho and he immediately recommended a fusion. During the fusion they found the L4 nerve was stuck down to the vertebra with scar tissue from a previous surgery and had to be freed up. It was obviously not sending the signals to the muscles in my leg.

Again that was just my experience and it did not start out as weakness it just went. Your fall could be from any number of things as other posters have already stated. Of course it should go without saying, it would be best to bring it up with your doctor.

    Do keep us posted.
  • Wow sorry to hear that must've been scary. I hope the Drs find out what's going on. What were the results of you head and neck MRI? or your lumbar? Keep us posted or write a new post and maybe it's happened to someone else and could relate. I'm hoping mine is muscle fatigue or some reaction to the hip injections I had recently. TC. Charry

  • As you know, my knee gave way the other day as I was coming downstairs. I was holding on to the banister, so managed to stop myself falling.
I know how scarey it feels - especially as I am recovering from lumbar fusion. I definately don't want to fall down stairs! :SS

I would advise that you contact your doctor to let him know about your fall. He is the best person to decide what caused it and if anything needs to be done about it.

Take care, and hold on when using the stairs!
Hoping that your pain is getting better and better since your injections. :-)
  • The hospital just did xrays of my lumbar and then did an MRI of lumbar the next day. The doc said nothing really had changed from the one I had in May of this year. So he thinks it more neurological. They knew I had issues with my neck and never looked into it didnt even do CT of my head which they knew I hit both times on the floor when I fell. Right now we are trying to get ahold of a Neuro that looks into things like MS and other issues. Will keep you posted. This is different from when I had the sciatic nerve pinched some years ago when my L5-S1 ruptured, that I do know what it feels like. Today I have off and on numbness in my feet and my leg muscles from top to bottom are hurting like they would if you exercised and didnt stretch. I will keep you posted and you do the same on what you find out. Good luck hun :)

but the everlasting effects of those and other spinal problems have made an impact.

I know that when I sit for any long period of time, I need to get up slowly and then stand for a while (10-30 seconds) before walking.

If I try to walk to soon after getting up, my right leg can easily buckle or that I just lost my balance.

From what my doctors have told me and what my deep tissue person believes, is scar tissue problems and some permanent nerve damage in my leg.

Nothing is for sure, but I do know how to avoid the problem (most of the time)

  • I had my leg go out at work a couple months ago. Thought nothing of it, till tonight for no reason it went out while going down the steps at our house. Twisted my ankle and very painful. Hoping this is not related to lumbar issues. I felt very helpless. Very painful, and yes I was sober. lol
  • Sometimes it would start shaking like and epileptic sezuire then go out in a matter of 2-3 seconds and other times it would lock up like a charley horse and I would go down like a sack of wet cement ( once in the ER parking lot). I am taking lyrica 3 times a day along with skelaxin 3 times a day and so far so good. I still won't climb a ladder though.

If I have to walk any distance where I can not grab something I take my cane. Particularly if I go to a mall or have to walk through a large parking lot. I still don't trust it enough.
  • It;s evident in the MRI's that the nerves are pinched bad due to DDD and 2 herinated disks. It's really not that bad anymore as the meds reduce it and give me some warning. I guess I am lucky, surgery is not an option. My chrio has me on a very intense back strengthing plan that seems to help the most.

I hope it doesn't happen to you again, it is kind of scary

  • Came close many times but not fallen yet. Its nerves nerves nerves from lower back. Neuropoty will make legs weak lack of feelings in them. Its like not proper blood circulation in the legs. It never seems to go away.

Only thing that helps is working the legs to keep good circulation whenever posible.

  • I saw a Sports Med. Dr. at the Cleveland Clinic and she`s ordering a Lumbar MRI and a EMG for my leg and concerned it`s been so long why I haven`t had an MRI since getting this weakness and she knows I have spine issues but wants to make sure the sciatic is from the back and not from a trapped nerve elsewhere in hip or leg.

Another EMG! My other one is sitting on a Neurologist`s office and never got back to my family Dr. so I decided not to wait around and sought out this Sports Med Dr. from a reputable place. I really think my Family Dr. is getting tired of referring and booking tests for me : ( Keep looking for a Dr. to help you. Get `er done! Charry

  • I notice that your original post is now quite old.
    Are you still falling?

I do hope that your MRI and EMG will provide some answers for you.

I am still waiting for the results of my EMG and nerve studies, but they only tested my arms and not my legs. This makes me think that they can't get complete answers as to what is going on. It is so frustrating how long all of this takes. I am sure that the doctors have much worse cases than me, so they don't have any sense of urgency at all.

I have another appointment on 18th October to see the neurosurgeon to see how I am progressing. I should get the EMG results then, I suppose. I should be having a full spine MRI scan before then to review at the appointment. No word of when that will happen. I wonder even IF it will happen. This NHS is very frustrating!

I'll be thinking of you Charry and hoping that they will find out what is going on. I am beginning to think that all this uncertainty and waiting is worse than the actual symptoms!!

Take good care of yourself >:D< >:D< >:D<

  • I`ve given up on getting the EMG studies from May 30th and this new Dr. says we can`t wait we need to know what`s going on now. I like her.

I hope you get your results soon and hope they find out what`s going on. It`s frustrating waiting that`s why I went to see this other Dr. All this waiting around is awful as things could be getting worse especially if symptoms are worse. Take care. >:D< Charry

  • So from what I've read....you will get a new "trusted" NVC/EMG? I so hope you can find out what the heck is going on?!?!?!

You have had a bunch of crap going on... but no one seems to give you relief woman!!! So yep, here I am rooting for you woman!!! Please keep pushing for results Charry!! *HUGZ*

  • My chiro is also a sports doc and he has me doing these really rough hamstring streaches. Both on the total gym and putting my foot up on a desk and holding it for 30 seconds.
The leg weakness from constantly keeping it in spasm from the pinched nerves does weaken the muscle a lot.

Good luck and I am glad you found a decent doc.

    Again just my experience

  • I phoned my neurosurgeon's secretary today to find out if there was any news of my EMG results. I was told that they have brought my appointment forward by a week.

I also mentioned that I was supposed to have a full spine MRI sccan done before then, and they said that I had one in June, so I didn't need another one.
I pointed out to them that was cervical flexion and extension x-rays, not a full spine MRI.
Now hopefully they will send me an appointment for an MRI scan.

I am glad that I did phone them!!
  • I see a Chiro also for my knee and neck injury I have from falling 6 weeks ago down 9 stairs getting my cat down some stairs of someone's house I turned around and fell and told the couple going by it's okay I'm alright! They barely looked at me gee thanks! Anyway the Chiro is doing my back also with inferential treatments and it's helping the muscle pain. It's good your Chiropractor is also a Sports med Dr. also.

I'm doing knee exercises also with a towel under my knee and gently lifting. I'm not getting any adjustments from the Chiropractor and if nothing is seriously wrong with my back then I will get the cold laser on my lumbar spine.

Jelly -- I can't believe they thought you had an MRI full body when you didn't. Good you're getting your appointment earlier but that means something is going on with the nerve and may require more testing?

Brenda--I got this great new Specialist so I'm getting the tests redone EMG somewhere else and getting an MRI due to other numbness also in the groin area and other issues. Thanks for your support. Charry

I think I can safely say that something is definately not right!!!

Wishing you a comfortable and relaxing weekend.

  • Hope you find out something SOON!

I have had the feeling of my legs "giving way" many times in the recent past. I have stumbled, but not really fallen. I have been SO VERY CAREFUL to not fall with my neck being so bad again and this deer/car accident a month ago. I am still walking but am flare all over now. Did you get the lumbar MRI? That should definitely shed some light on all of this. I am being scheduled for an MRI of my lumbar again now. Good Luck!

    Gracie girl
  • No MRI yet. They say it may take up to 2 weeks wait but I'm getting the EMG for my leg on Thursday. Thanks and hope you get yours soon. Charry

    Hey Charry,

Crouching and me DO NOT get along... What I thought where issues in my lower back, my present surgeon thinks are now cervical related (myelopathy - yummy). I have a shower seat now, as my legs get "funky" and not stable.

Let your body tell you "something is wrong" an go from there. I know I am NOT happy with my changes, but like you, I try to work with it. Try a shower seat, walking predictably, planning shopping (sitting areas) etc. Get with you doc, write all of this down and see what shakes out... Sorry Charry, I know this bites big time!!

situations in when this has happened to me.

1 - Because of nerve damage in my right leg, from the knee down and drop foot, at times I will stumble, or even just lose the feeling and the leg just gives out.
This happens more on steps than on level ground.

2 - With my current hip problem. I could be walking along, my hip locks up and my left leg becomes almost non-existent. I have stumbled a number of times with this.

3 - While working at the package store. I will be walking around with my cane helping customers with wine selections and all of a sudden, my left leg just drops and I almost fall to the ground.

I can understand the current situation with my hip, but with the spine, I do think its nerve related.

  • Is your EMG testing today, or next Thursday?
I wish you well and hope that it will reveal what is going on.

I have been experiencing my knees (especially right) and hips (especially right) giving way on the stairs and when walking. I haven't actually fallen, and assumed that it was my hips and knees just getting older. Now I wonder if this could be leg weakness. I have been asked several times by doctors if I have leg or arm weakness and I say no.

I haven't fallen down lately, so I am hoping that there isn't much weakness! Lol!!

  • No matter how often, it is kind of nerve wracking. No play on words. Kind of scary eh?

This morning I was standing on a slight incline in our back yard talking with some of our guests and my leg gave "out". Actually, the more you think about it, the more you actually realise you are buckling over sometimes. I wonder if it gets worse over time?

    Has it for you Ron?

    Gracie

  • Well sold my house almost 2 months ago and have injured myself 3x! Fell down 9 stairs about 8 weeks ago and injured my knee and still having issues. Hurt my neck going under a bush and it whacked me in the neck.

While high kneeling on a wooden window box to Windex wipe some window panes, the wooden lid broke and I fell through the wooden lid and into the box and hit both of my shins and scraped my one leg right through my jeans. Severe shin pain and bruising since Monday evening. Seeing my Dr. tomorrow about the injury. 3 strikes and I'm done! Falls ouch! Charry
