Hi Everybody,
I'm new to this forum and I have a few questions for those of you that have the same back problems as I do. I have been diagnosed with Degenerative Disc Disease, Spinal Stinosis, Herniated discs L4, L5-S1. I've gotten multiple Epidural steroid injections. I've tried acupuncture which helps. I've gone to physical therapy, but everytime I go I hear something different. Use the knee to chest exercize, then the next one tells me not do to that exercize it'll cause more of herniation. Some I leave in more pain than others. I went to a chiropractor yesterday and I felt good when I left (still in pain, but more loosened up) but woke up today with a lot of pain! I'm not sure where to go from here. I have an issue usually about once or twice a year that leaves me out of commission for about 3 weeks!! Lots of laying around, no work! I do need to lose weight and I want to end this cycle of pain for GOOOD!! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thank you

  • Welcome to Spine-Health.

While chiropractors have their place, most of us will tell you that if you have any problems with your spine, it's best to see a spine specialist or surgeon (not necessarily for surgery) to see what treatment options are best. When you have spine problems, having someone manipulate your spine, such as a chiropractor, can be dangerous.

I wonder why you're getting different exercises at PT? Are you going to different places? Are these PTs familiar with your situation? It sounds like you've gotten an MRI and having tried injections and PT, I would think that your next step is to see a spine specialist and see what they recommend after looking at your MRI.

Hope you get the help you need. We all understand spine pain and the frustration it brings.

  • Hi Cath - I started with my primary care pysician and was then referred to a neuro-orthopedic surgeon. I've discussed with him the ideas of acupuncture and chiropractic care. I was very nervous myself at being manipulated, but so far so good! I had a second adjustment today. I am very stiff and sore in the morning, but once I get moving I seem to be much better. I spend a lot of my day walking!! I've shared my MRI results with my chiropractor so he's aware of my herniations and where they are. I want to try as many conventional treatments as I can before considering a discectomy.
