Questions to Ask the Doctor

I have a consult with a surgeon regarding a "moderately large extrusion" of my C6 / C7. I know absolutley nothing about what surgery he might recommend. What I'd like to know are what are some good questions to ask the surgeon at the initial consultation?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in Advance for your help!!!

Under the Medical section there is an item on
38 questions to ask your doctor before surgery.

  • First let me say welcome to spine-health, have a look around and there are many of us whom have been in your shoes or are recovering from surgery.

I might also suggest that you take a look at the animated cervical surgery video we have here, just in case they talk surgery and also learn what terms in the spine are.

My approach has been to make two sets of questions: one if they talk surgery and the second if they discuss treating conservatively. That way you are ready each way according to how the visit is going to go. But I can say I applaud you in preparing for your visit.

Some other things that might help is to be sure you have all your medical history with you. Also know what makes the pain worse and what makes it better. You might also need to discuss how the problem is effecting your life. Also be prepared to discuss any weakness issues or numbing or any other sensations you might have.

Just thought I would stop by and welcome you to spine-health. If there is anything i can do for you don't hesitate to pm me. Keep us posted on how the appointment goes. Take care for now.

That is exactly what I was looking for, Thanks. I'm new to the site and haven't had a chance to check everything out yet, but I'm working on it!

Thanks for the Welcome. I appreciate it. I looked at one of the neck surgery videos. It seemed very well done. I'm not sure what my surgeon is going to suggest, so I hesitate to speculate on anything right now. I will be back afer my appt. on the 7th to give an update, and probably ask a lot more questions!

    Thanks again to all.
